Fabian Schar had a difficult start to his career at Newcastle, and until early November he had only played a few times for the team.
But then he was brought on at halftime in the home game against Watford when Jamaal Lascelles was injured, and the Swiss International has never looked back.
He is a candidate for Player of the Season in his first term on Tyneside and already a very popular player.
His grit, energy, and determination are there for all to see and his transfer fee of £3M from Deportivo makes him one of Newcastle’s best ever recent buys.
And he has praised Rafa Benitez for always giving the right speech before the games and coming up with the right game plans and tactics that allow Newcastle to win games.
Newcastle had a terrible time of it over the first 10 games of the season until we won 1-0 at home to Watford in early November – and since then we have amassed more points in the league than any club outside the top six.
Rafa Benitez – with one of his best players – Fabian Schar
That’s 39 points in 26 games – precisely 1.5 points a game – and would mean 57 points in the season if we could keep that up over the full 38 games.
That would put us very close to 7th place in the league, which is the first place to aim for – starting next season.
Fabian was interviewed just before Saturday’s game at Brighton. as reported in the Northern Echo:
“We are all happy how things are now in this season.” “After the first ten games, nobody was expecting that we would be safe with 41 points with three games left.”
“We have improved a lot this year, we have a strong squad, and we are playing well together, sticking all together, and that is the key.”
“The master (Benitez) is giving us always the right speeches ahead of the games, the right tactics, so it’s important also for us.”
“We are one group, with all the staff, the team and the fans. That’s the reason we have done well.”
“You want to win each game, you want to get points and to have the winning feeling after every game.”
“We will keep going like this and doing everything to get some more points during the last three games.”
“We will only finish when the season is over, and until then there is some work to do.”
“With 41 points we know we are OK, and we are up to 13th, so it’s a great feeling to get the last two wins in a row.”
“Of course, the home form is key.” “It is always special to play at St James’ Park, where we have fantastic support all the time.”
“So it’s a big plus for us to have such a great atmosphere for us to play in front of and win for them.”
“But even when we play away, for example like against Leicester, the fans were amazing. The fans are always behind us in every game.”
“They help us a lot, we need them and they sing for us all the time. The fans, home and away, definitely help us to perform.”
Sounds like Fabian Schar is a happy camper at Newcastle United – he’s certainly proving to be a great player for us.
