Rafa was positive at his press conference yesterday as there seemed to have been a breakthrough in the contract talks although he said only a little progress had been made.
He talks to Lee Charnley daily, and Lee is kind of the go-between between Ashley and Rafa.
It also seems before any deal is agreed Rafa will need to meet with the owner, but it will be challenging to get a deal agreed now before the end of the season.
Rafa Benitez – more upbeat about a new contract
That’s a bad reflection on how incompetent and slow the club is at working on any negotiations.
This is what Rafa has said as reported in the Chronicle today:
“Yes, it was positive because Lee knows what I’m talking about and what I think. And I know what they think.”
“So at least we can now move forward. It’s not more or less ‘confident’, but it’s more ‘positive’, because at least we – my representatives and the club – are talking now.”
“We don’t have too much news. I can’t say when it will be done but we’ll have another meeting and then we’ll talk about the future. We’ll give the information if we’re progressing or not.”
“The fact we had that conversation was progress,”
“Lee’s not an issue because I can talk to him any time, and I speak to him every week and every day, so it’s not a big problem.”
“It’s just my people – their representatives – and the club.” “The fact we had that conversation was progress,”
“I understand the question, and I will let you know if I meet with Ashley”
“I have had the conversations and Charnley said we will organize a meeting. We will let you know.”
We shouldn’t overplay this good news because the fact there was no communication between the two parties going on was astonishing.
There seems to be lots of games being played here.
