Newcastle Gave It Everything – But We Didn’t Have The Luck

You couldn’t say the Newcastle team was not well-prepared and ready for the game with Liverpool tonight.

But we lost 3-2 against the high-flyers but the Newcastle side played their hearts out, and with a little more luck we could have won this game.

Rafa has made two changes bringing back Ki in midfield, and Lascelles returned at center-back

But we got off to a poor start by conceding a poor goal after only 13 minutes when it seemed like Paull Dummett lost his man, and an unmarked Virgil van Dijk powered home an unstoppable header from a corner by Trent Alexandar-Arnold.

Rafa will not be happy with the marking on that set piece.

Salomon Rondon scores in the second half

But Newcastle hit back after only 7 minutes when back to equalize.

Matt Ritchie played a nice low ball from the left into the box to Rondon, whose shot was handled on the line by Alexandar-Arnold.

Atsu, however, was there to put home the rebound for his first goal in over 16 months – and he went crazy.

There was controversy about whether Alexandar-Arnold should have been sent off becasue it was a deliberate handball which prevented the ball crossing the line.

The fact that we scored negated the red card,

But after 29 minutes Liverpool scored again, and it all looked too easy as the ball was played into the box to Salah and flicked it past Dubravka to make it 2-1 at half time.

We thought Dubravka could have done better, but Salah’s flick was perfectly placed to beat the goalkeeper to his right.

It was 2-1 at half-time after a scintillating first half of play.

Then after 51 minutes Rondon forced a save from Brazilian goalkeeper from a KI corner.

But when the ball was played back into the box to the Venezuelan, who let the ball bounce once and then hit it on the volley into the net for his 10th Premier League goal of the season and 11th in all competitions.

Liverpool then lost Salah to a head injury after the striker collided with Dubravka and there was quite a hold-up in the game.

But then when it looked like we could get the draw more loose marking allowed Origi,  who replaced Salah. to head home a right-wing free-kick from Xherdan Shaqiri as he out-jumped Lascelles.

We had everything but the win so we have taken only 1 point from our last two games, and we dropped a place in the league to 14th place.

Bournemouth beat a 9 man Spurs side 1-0 with a stoppage-time winner and Crystal Palace beat a now relegated  Cardiff City side 3-2.

Bournemouth are now 3 points above Newcastle with one game to play.

If can beat Fulham next Sunday we can still finish on 45 points one point more than last season but no higher than 13th place now.

Crystal Palace are on 46 points, and we cannot finish above them now.

    Rob
merit marks – had a late night did not get in after midnight – mentally drained and annoyed disappointed at the way Liverpool cheated the 3 points.
From beginning to end they dived rolled around and Henderson fuc*kin’ moaned on all game trying to get our players sent off.
First half of the first half we were not at the races – defence shaky to say the least – the divers passed the ball around us through us – did not get near them slowly we got into the game closing them down harassing them into mistakes which they did not like – Henderson in particular whinging tw*t.
In the end we were brilliant (second half) best team by a mile
There first goal could of been chalked off as they blocked our players going for the ball which by the law of the game is a foul.
    Last goal bloody joke.

    here goals my merit marks

Dubravka 7 – had nothing much to do just pick the ball out the net three times – didn’t have a real save to made.
Dummet 7 – few shaky moments early on but got better as the game went on only wish he would carry the ball forward more first half – tends to pass square back to Lascalles – second half carried the ball forward and got forward
Lascalles 6 – thought he was poor last night struggled – not sure if fully fit dis not want the ball and nine times out of times passed it sideways to Dummett
Schar 8 – few dodgy passes early on when put under pressure but oozes class on the ball some great long balls in with a few crap ones put in a couple of goal saving challenges.
Manquilla 7 – had a decent game not bad going forward last night put in some great tackles people blamed him for first goal – could of been but was left in no-mans land trying to mark two men.
Ritchie 10 – my man of the match unlucky for their winning goal no way was it a foul – drove Newcastle on – played as if he was a captain shouting at his players to put more effort in when flagging.
Ki 7 – started slowly lost the ball but another who grew into the game as he found space neat and tidy but needs to deliver more to be in future plans.
Hayden 9 – Another excellent performance – cannot let him leave without a fight – tackled, passed all game and got forward at every opportunity only draw back had a coulee of chances to have a shot but dallied on the ball
Perez 8 – Unlucky with shot first half which was brilliantly saved – another who got better as the game went on caused problems that Liverpool reverted to fouling him.
Rondon 10 – what a colossus last night – took the fight to Liverpool gave Van-Prick a torrid time who was another reverted to fouling him – never a free kick to the Dippers near the end just two strong for Van-Prick and we had a three on two
Atsu 6 – Scored our first goal but thought he was our weakest player got into some great positions but his final ball – thought process what to do was to slow and was closed down all to easy. Looked slow at times when we did not have the ball and backed out of tackles.

Atmosphere 10 – brilliant – spoilt by the dippers who in the Gallowgate End who wanted to fight all-night. PRICKS and the so called supporters who sold their tickets to them – or the club for selling them

RAFA 10 – got tactics spot on felt sorry for him at the way the game ended.

COME on City hope you win – got more class along with their manager Pep – unlike Klippery Klop

I was really pissed off when Van Dijk blatantly shoved Ayoze off the ball and no foul was given.

MOTD was a farce both on the pitch and on the TV.
Smirking Lineaker clearly failing to make any call on the blatant Liverpool dive and incompetent Linesman. Don’t recall any of the more contentious tackles or or incidents being shown either. It’s as if the BBC want like so many things they do to sterilise and sanitise their content. Mind if had been the likes of Mitro lunging in or diving like a Duck then they would of course have been all over the incident like a rash.

Charlie – great analysis. I only disagreed with atsu, i have said he’s our weakest link and nowhere near almiron lots of times but i thought he had possibly his best ever game for us last night. Yes he still has holes in his game but if rafa can get that improvement out of him he is worth holding on to. Did more right than wrong, 7/10 for me.

Stronger in the tackle, improved passing, direct running.

If we had been given fair ref decisions and had almiron playing I’m convinced we’d have won that. 4 or 5 quality signings from being competitive.

    Rafa must stay

So just because Atsu scores from the rebound the blatant and deliberate handball on the line by Trent Arnold is ignored by the ref, no red, no sending off and no yellow either………talk about open bias, for a start, the goal was scored by another player, I’m sure Rondon will be aggrieved as his shot was destined for the net , Atsu scoring denied us the opportunity of having a man sent off for deliberate handball denying a goal……..where is that in the rule book?
If a player deliberately handles the ball denying a goal, they should walk, the fact the little pr!ck set up another goal and caused us grief all night when he should have been in the showers makes it even more hard to take…….then , the “foul” that led to their third…..that is a joke……hopefully that tosser will be banned by the premier league for deliberately conning the match officials leading to a goal……..I feel cheated, apart from the cheating and diving all over the place, the referee and his accomplices denied us the chance to win (we may not have done) but that chance was taken away from us by the poor officials

Gutted after that you have to defend better than that. Sala carried off on a stretcher no they carried him off by the handles on his shorts.
Mariner has previous with us sending off if a player fouls and the ref plays advantage he goes back to book him what’s the difference
But after the match to see a bus load of scum got off the bus to fight and ransack Tesco outside the ground sums up the bindippers for me. Finally the flag was magnificent come on city.

I disagree I thought Atsu was brilliant had his best game in a while, I thought Haden was man of the match, when you really focus on him and how he plays it really stands out just how good he is. Best 4 players for me were Hayden, Shar, Rondon and Perez.
