There’s news coming out of Portugal today that Rafa Benitez wants to sign Benfica winger Rafa Silva – that comes via his agent.
The 25-year-old 14 times capped Portuguese International joined Benfica back in 2015 and has had an excellent season in Lisbon.
Rafa will be trying to bring in six talented players in this summer’s transfer window so that Newcastle will not be fighting relegation for a third successive season.
It gets to be a drag when we are fighting to stay in the Premier League every season.
The Newcastle scouting team have regularly watched Benfica this season with central midfielder Andres Samaras also being a target this summer – when he will become a free agent.
25-year-old winger Rafa Silva
Silva’s agent Araujo has been beating the drum and has said this to the Portuguese radio station Radio Renascenca’s Bola Branca show:
“They – Newcastle – are one of those teams interested,”
“Whatever happens, will happen. Now, the main focus is to be a Champion in Portugal.”
“Benfica know what Rafa (Silva) wants in terms of a new contract, so we are waiting calmly.”
“I think it’s going to happen because there is a will from the club and there is Rafa’s will as well.”
“The player is well at Benfica, now he wants to see his salary situation go to what he [feels he] really represents for Benfica.”
Silva’s had a great season with 15 goals and two assists in just 19 Primeira Liga starts this term, and he would add more creativity up front – which is what we need.
He would cost something over £20M, so it remains to be seen how much Mike Ashley will give Rafa to spend this summer.
Always assuming Rafa wants to continue putting up with the stuff coming from the frugal Newcastle owner.
That’s an assumption.
