The Northern Echo is reporting today that Rafa Benitez is interested in signing England striker Tammy Abraham of Chelsea if the London club are willing to sell him this summer.
Rafa tried to get Tammy to the club on loan early last season (summer 2017), but due to some incompetence in our transfer process Newcastle missed out.
He eventually went to Swansea City who took him on loan for the season – which turned out to be a relegation season for the south Wales club.
Abraham has been on loan in the Championship this season to Aston Villa and has scored 25 goals in 37 Championship appearances – an excellent return.
21-year-old Tammy Abraham – in action for the England U21 side
He is the second top scorer in Championship with Teemu Pukki of Norwich above him with 29 goals.
Dwight Gaule on loan at West Brom has 23 goals in 39 appearances in the Championship this season.
Rafa rates this player and the top-class manager would bring the very best out of a player who is still only 21-years-old, with 2 full caps for England.
For the England U21 side, Tammy was a star player with 8 goals in 22 appearances for England at that level.
Newcastle want a permanent transfer, rather than a loan deal, presumably becasue if Abraham plays well at Newcastle, his transfer price will go up.
Rafa’s more willing to buy the player first and then bring the very best out of him.
Chelsea, however, are under a transfer ban this summer, and the London side may want to keep him on board as a safety first move – since they cannot bring in new players.
£30M is being mentioned as a potential fee for Abraham.
That’s big money for Newcastle but from what we’ve seen of Abraham and given he is still young and has a lot to learn he may be worth that figure.
But Rafa would then need to work his magic to bring the best out of the youngster and make the England International into one of the best strikers in England.
