Benitez during his press conference today said Newcastle have had a good season, even though the best we can finish is in 13th position compared to last seasons’ finish in 10th place.
But a win against Fulham will get us to 45 points – one more than last season.
It’s been a good season because we avoided relegation, but Rafa wants more from Ashley – starting next season – otherwise he will likely walk this summer.
Rafa Benitez – I wanted to finish higher in the league table
This is what Rafa has said to the Chronicle today when asked about the season:
“The target was to stay in the Premier League – we knew how difficult it could be.”
“We needed to be focused and concentrated and now after being safe, then you are more relaxed.”
“You have to prepare for the games in the same way, but you know it is not the same as if you are at the bottom of the table and every point can make a difference.”
“We didn’t realize that to finish 10th last year was a miracle.”
“This year we were thinking maybe we can finish seventh, but it was impossible.”
“To be consistent you have to have everything in place.”
“When you have Fulham and Wolves promoted and they are spending £100m it is totally different.”
“To be where we are is a great achievement.”
“You could ask the same question after eight games and I would have been over the moon.”
“At the beginning, you never know. The teams that were promoted were spending so much money. It is fair enough.”
“I am still not happy because I would like to be higher.”
The Newcastle hierarchy really need to settle on Rafa’s future at Newcastle this week.
There is a meeting planned with Lee Charnley next week – whether Mike Ashley will bother to show up – we have no idea.
It’s incompetent they have waited this long.
Readers think we have a decent chance of winning the game on Sunday afternoon at Craven Cottage.
We need to finish off the season on a high.
