This Date In History – The Birth Of A Legend, The Disaster Of Relegation

Today is May 11 and this date is one of great significance for our beloved club.  It is the birthdate of one of our greatest legends as well as the darkest day in our recent history.

Jackie Milburn – born this day in 1924

The great Geordie striker Jackie Milburn was born today and leave it to the current Newcastle Board to have this date marred.  It is also the day that Newcastle were officially relegated three years ago.

We had finally spent money and on very good players in the summer of 2016.  But the decision to bring in Steve McClaren was typical Newcastle at the time.  The results were devastating.

Though justly removed from his position at the time, McClaren’s early mark could not be erased.  Sunderland’s 3-0 drubbing of Everton in their penultimate game resigned Newcastle to the second-tier.  That date was also May 11.

Not to be so negative today, but we have to admit Rafa’s comments yesterday are frustrating us.  How has his contract situation been allowed to reach this point?

Never has it been so obvious and just plain reasonable to give a manager what he wants.  He is everything Newcastle need at the moment and with backing who knows what the future holds.

We just hope Benitez stays and gets backing.  If that happens, maybe that date will be one for the history books.

Since I mentioned Sunderland, I will also mention that they have a big game today.  Their first leg against Pompey in the playoffs are today.  Will May 11th get a little darker for them?  Guess we’ll find out.

Well it’s my birthday today and I had live through that nightmare 3 years ago when Sunderland won and we were relegated. Hopefully Pompey will give me a nice gift and stuff the mackums today. ??

    Happy birthday to you Legolas.
However, we are still in the nightmare…
If Rafa is going, what’s our strategy?

Was not at the rugby last night
Watched it on TV seemed a good atmosphere pkenty of noise from the Clermont fans with their drums -ground half full but very colourful – lots of flags
    Good game to watch
Great atmosphere in the City st the fan zone on the quayside
Should be fun today with thousands of the Irish in Toon

Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal fans should stop moaning and be grateful to UEFA for selecting these remote, desolate, dangerous venues with poor food options as venues for the Championship and Europa finals.

It could have been so much worse, they could have selected Sunderland as a venue with cheesy chips for breakfast.

Supporters will need a visa to enter Azerbaijan and London-based fans face a journey of more than 2,468 miles to Baku Olympic Stadium. Klopp said: “How can you have finals in Kiev [where Liverpool played last year’s Champions League final] and Baku? I don’t know what these travel guys have for breakfast.”

So the European Challenge Cup last night was played at SJP in Newcastle.
Yet the BBC seem unable to produce a match report on this ?
Wot – too far north for them and not in Lundun town ?
    Bias again ?

I noticed that no coverage or report
Today’s build up and game on channel 4 and BT Sport at 4pm
Some excellent coverage yesterday to the build up – the City and fans plus look in the changing rooms after the game
Enjoyed the coverage / looking forward to today

According to the Chronic, there’re potential bidders sniffing around, one close to the data room it says.

Now tbere is a surprise and a cue an opportunity for Mikey boy, or more likely Penfold, to tell Rafa that much as they love Rafa and would ordinarily support his plans they can’t. But, they say they hope he understands that they can’t and can only offer him one year contract under the current arrangements

Mikey boy thinks to himself, ‘Bye bye Rafa, missing you already’

It’s obvious which of Mikey boy’s companies would benefit from the rugby – Newcastle United (Rugby Proceeds) Ltd, another subsidiary of MASH Holdings!

How remiss of me not to mention that the costs associated with hosting the rugby’d fall on the football club business. Hey ho, another cost that puts a hole in the funds available for transfers.

It’s also 13 years since Alan Shearer scored his final goal for us, came on as a sub and scored from the penalty shop having taken the Captains armband.

Sounds slightly set up to me….

    Anyone there?

    Thanks runheed,

Are you talking about his testimonial against Celtic?

I was there he was injured after the Mackum game. He came on to score the penalty but could hardly move. A set up, yes but well deserved.

Toon22 is quite easy to skip past, his big green frog picture makes this quite easy.

You may end up missing Jane’s posts but you wont be missing anything of interest there either.

Some of you just want a reason to piss and moan and think harassing or getting at Toon 22 gives you some sort of Kudos with the other dick heads on the blog.

Toon22 is one of the least offensive posters on here. If you’re having a problem with him grating on you then remember – his repetition and constancy are directly proportional to the adverse engagement he enjoys. If you stop wearing the cap, he will probably stop calling you out for wearing it. Just a thought. I don’t think he’s ever called me a shill or Ashley lover. Probably because I don’t play into his hands and tell him to shut up. Or whine about his freedom to speak.

It’s quite easy to skip one poster if you dont like his posts but when you have several taking one to task over the length of a day it’s much harder to avoid as the whole day is a exercise in schoolyard bullyin.

This is why so many have stopped posting
