It’s another transfer window and more news that Matt Ritchie will soon be leaving us.
It’s the same story as last summer – that Stoke City want the Newcastle left-winger who has been one of Rafa’s best signings for Newcastle.
Stoke did not do well last season and finished in 15th place with 55 points in the Championship.
They will want to do a lot better next season but a second season down below always brings financial pressures.
When you think of Matt Ritchie, not only has he performed brilliantly for us in all three seasons and epitomized the spirit and grit of Rafa’s team – but he dropped down a division from Bournemouth to play for us.
Matt Ritchie – represents the heart and soul of Rafa’s Newcastle team
For purposes of full transparency – we love this lad.
This is what Matt has said today to the Shields’ Gazette:
“There are discussions at the moment – hopefully, we can get them resolved.”
“This is a massive football club – I’m really enjoying playing for it.”
“So until I’m told my services are no longer required, I’m fighting for my life, as I do every week to perform.”
“Who knows what the future holds, but until I’m told my services are no longer required, I’ll do everything for the football club.”
“Yeah, of course, I want a new contract.”
When Rafa saw the report in the press a couple of weeks back that said Newcastle were ready to Matt go this summer becasue of his age and would not offer him a new contract the manager was not too happy about that.
This is what Rafa said at the time about that and one of his favorite players:
“I’m not happy – it’s not true,”
“My job is to prepare Ritchie for the next game. I cannot give any advice about the future – my contract is up on June 30.”
“If I do not have a contract after next month, how can I say to him ‘I will not give you a contract’? “It’s a decision for the club.”
Mike Ashley needs to start doing his job at Newcastle for a change and sign Rafa up to a long-term contract – this week.
Rafa can then get with players like Matt Richie, Ayoze Perez, and Salomon Rondon and tell them they have a future at the club.
The sooner that happens, the better.
