Rafa’s Exciting New Transfer Target Will Challenge Ashley’s Existing Policy

There’s no new news on the talks taking place between Rafa Benitez and Mike Ashley today (yet), but Newcastle are being linked with several players in the transfer window.

Juan Mata of Manchester United is available on a free this summer as his contract runs out at the Red Devils.

And it doesn’t look like new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees him as part of Manchester United’ future.

There is a report in the Sun today that Rafa wants him at Newcastle.

There are a couple of problems we see with that coming from the owner Mike Ashley.

Rafa Benitez with Juan Mata – circa 2013

Mata has just turned 31, and his wages will be very high.

On the other hand, his transfer fee is low.

Rafa has a good relationship with Juan having managed him while Rafa was the interim manager at Chelsea when the London club won the Europa League in May 2013.

Quite an excellent interim manager for 8 months.

Mata’s reported wages are £140K/week.

Yes – that’s every week – not for the year!

Mata played 135 times for Chelsea with 32 goals and 58 assists from 2011 until 2014.

He then joined Manchester United and played 218 times for them with 45 goals and 37 assists.

He would do very well at Newcastle for say the next three years.

Ashley and Benitez have been deadlocked on the buying of older players, and sometimes Rafa wants to bring them in when they strengthen the team on the field.

Mike Ashley only thinks of the money and their huge wages, and there’s no sell-on value.

Two other players Rafa wants to stay on at Newcastle on new contracts are Salomon Rondon from West Brom and Matt Richie, both of whom are 29.

What do you think?

The thing is we could afford these players and wages if Ashley wasn’t so tight.

Lesh………… Take your political agenda and far fetched conspiracy theories and shove them down someone else’s throat. We are at a pivotal stage in the club’s future until Rafa finally signs up and folk are rightly concerned about that not Trump and Farage.

Jib was right when saying that you only pretend to be interested in the football and it’s a poor pretence at that.

Mata is a more realistic option than Bale – surely at his age he can’t expect the same level of wages – maybe £80k per week which is just about our top level. Move over Lee Charnley I’ll do the negotiations

    Two more for the list:-

Newcastle United are said to be keen on Leeds United duo Kalvin Phillips and Jack Clarke, as they look to freshen up their squad for the 2019/20 Premier League campaign. (Team Talk)

Juan Mata is probably extremely rich. He’s likely earned north of 30 million pounds playing football and has a net worth of more than that. So money is maybe not at all his primary motivation at this stage of his career. He’s also a pretty level headed, a very decent guy by all accounts and seemingly smart too. He’s the sort of bloke who might just buy into Rafa’s project and take less money to be a part of it. He’ll know all about Newcastle, the size, the support, the potential and the drought – he’d be loved, and he’s on a Bosman. Not so far fetched.

I think the only way we would even entertain Mata is if we sent Longstaff the other way to finance the deal. I do think his age will be the main stumbling block, no way will Ashley agree to that. I think it will be the main reason Benitez wont sign a new deal. Ashley is a stubborn twat, we all know that,

Mata and Rondon are 2 players that would easily improve our squad but they have no sell on value in Cashleys eyes so its a non starter IMO
