There’s a report in the Shields Gazette which has just been released that says that Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is ready to sit down with Rafa and “finalize Rafa’s contract.”
Presumably, that means Rafa will soon be signing his new deal to stay at Newcastle.
But in the article, there doesn’t seem anything to back up the claim – unless the local reporters are hearing something behind the scenes that something is about to happen?
Rafa Benitez – report Mike Ashley ready to do the deal?
The talks on Rafa’s contract started last Thursday so this is now the 7th day of talks, with a meeting having taken place last Thursday and communication having continued by email and phone since that time.
The report is upbeat and positive, but we’ll believe it all when the club comes out and issues an official statement that Rafa Benitez has signed a new deal to stay at the Tyneside club.
We hope the report is accurate.
We’d also like the deal to be for five years (at least), but for Rafa to sign a long term deal he needs cast-iron assurances that he will be heavily backed by Mike Ashley in the transfer windows coming up.
Rafa will only stay if he is able to build a top team at Newcastle that can challenge every season for Europe.
And start to win trophies!
