Newcastle Want £20M For Dwight Gayle – Worth Every Penny To Ambitious Championship Club

There’s news in the Evening Standard today that Newcastle have named their price for striker Dwight Gayle this summer if other clubs want to buy him.

Dwight has proved he can score goals in the Championship almost at will, and he scored 23 in 32 appearances for Newcastle in 2016-2017 and 23 goals in 39 appearances for West Brom last season.

Any ambitious Championship club wanting to get promoted will have to pay at least £20M for Dwight — and it will be worth their while if they can get promoted.

Dwight Gayle – 46 goals in 71 Championship games over two seasons with Magpies and Baggies

Once they are promoted, they will get £100M at least from the Premier League in their first season, and then parachute payments if and when they are relegated.

It is Fulham’s parachute payment that makes it possible to sign Gayle for £20M this summer and pay him a decent wage.

It also looks like Rafa Benitez is now willing to sell Dwight if he can good money for him, so he can bring in other players over the summer.

Gayle is paid over £50K/week at Newcastle, and he will not want to get less than that if he does move to a Championship club, with still two years left on his contract on Tyneside.

It’s already too much to pay for West Brom, who have to tighten their financial belts having failed to get promoted at the first attempt.

But we can see a top Championship club wanting to acquire Dwight Gayle in the summer for £20M if they are serious about getting promoted.

What do you think?

Rondon 29, club don’t want to pay £16m.
Gayle, 29, club wanting £20m for him.

Twenty Million’s all well and good but if it’s paid over a few years it’s not worth a candle as far as Rafa’s concerned.

I don’t get why we keep getting linked to selling Gayle like. We need a striker in addition to rondon. We shouldn’t be in a position where we need to sell to buy.

Rondon first choice, Gayle second is decent in my eyes.

    As far as Ashley’s concerned, a £20m sale’s good business whereas…….

£20 million ‘s far too cheap for the best striker in the Championship, we would be better off keeping him and playing him up front with Almiron, defenders don’t like quick attackers and this pairing would be awesome. Whilst Rondon was good for us last season, were we to sign him, opposing teams will have adapted to him, thus it will be harder for him to perform as well, also the older you get past and new injuries you pick up usually take their toll.

Not sure Gayle is the answer Ronaldo. I think a clean break is best. He’s never got double figures in the PL has, he? Is that right? Think it is, but stand to be corrected if not.
You can see why from his tine with us. Not like he didn’t get chances, he just couldn’t take them. He really did miss some shockers.
If we can get £20 for him, I’d take it and look at investing it elsewhere. He seems to want that fraction of a second extra time you simply don’t get in the PL, that you do in the Championship. If we’d gone down, I’d be saying keep him 100%. I’m pretty sure he could score abroad as well, but who could afford him apart from the obvious – and they go for the very best.
Tbh, I doubt there’s a better Championship striker and if you’re an ambitious club with a few quid to spare, he’d, be first on my shopping list. If we kept him and he failed again, his price would go down. I think this is the optimum time to sell to get maximum profit. He’ll never be worth £20m again imo so it’s, now or never. This shows ambition. Look to improve. He’s failed before – more than once – but the last time, for us, was really obvious. I like him, but we’ll never get £20m for him again. Sell him and give Rafa the money to replace him.

Long time reader, but haven’t posted in years and looking to change that.

That said, assuming Rafa signs up, any predictions on first team signings?

I think backline is set. While he may want to upgrade Yedlin and Manquillo, I think he will keep both for the time being and focus on other weak areas as there are too many pieces that will need to be filled. If Rondon doesn’t sign, we need to replace him and Gayle who doesn’t seem to cut it in the Prem. Hayden seems out the door and Shelvey doesn’t appear to fit in Rafa’s plans. Plus a backup on the wings and at LB. That just seems like too many people to bring in with Ashley’s likely limited budget. So minimum I think would be:

    Strikers: 2 (1 backup, 1 starter)
    Wing: 1 (backup)
    CM: 2
    LB: 1 backup

    Standard procedure from Ashley then.

Depends, if you think he is good back up and a stop gap to ensure you can try and fill other roles in the squad, cms, wing back, and attacking mid/wing depth then I agree. If you think you can sell him and bring in someone else in addition to rondon and another then I would disagree with that going by last experience.

Tbf, he had issues at the start of the season in PL, the fact he was getting in positions and getting chances to me suggests he can handle the premier league and it’s more of a mental thing with regards to taking them. He did miss his fair few but wouldn’t say it was lots, as that would suggest we created lots of opportunities in the first place and we are not a creative side like that.

He offered more than goals though especially in second half of the season, where he was a big part in finishing 10th. Not too shabby with a striker not deemed good enough for the league. He finally started to build a partnership with Perez, he links up with shelvey better than anyone in the squad, he knows how and when to press and run the channels and knows our system very well.

He’s not great, not someone you want to lead as first choice striker but he is good stand in. Who else do you get to replace him keeping in mind that we need to sign rondon or another striker in addition? Tammy Abraham going for more than £20m suggests that you need to go abroad which is a gamble in itself. Not as big a gamble as selling Gayle for however and expecting it to be fully reinvested in a replacement.

I reckon the way we were setup by the end of the season Gayle could easily get 10 goals last season was also Rondon’s first season in the premiership scoring more than 10 goals?

Both would offer us something different and both have the work-rate to play together in games!

You potentially then would have Rondon , Perez and Gayle all capable of goals and troubling teams with Almiron still a bit of an unknown quality for producing goals and assists.

Rafa didn’t want to get rid of Gayle last season he was forced into it to get Rondon and I am fairly certain he would be wanting to have at least 2 strikers to call upon as Joselu and Muto are not going to be capable!

Sorensen or Toure could also be given a chance but they look well off getting into the first team picture at the moment

If Gayle is worth £20m, Tammy is worth £40m. Personally I think we’ll get £15m for Gayle if we are lucky. No team will want him on premier league wages for 3-4 years. If they don’t go up at first attempt he will be a massive burden especially if his form dips as it usually does with pacy strikers in their 30s. Nobody would buy him last year for 15 and I suspect it will be the same this year. I suspect we will get more loan offers with a big loan fee (4-5m) or some deal where they will pay us the full amount only if they go up.

Magpie0722 – You need a target man the way Rafa plays. Gayle can’t do that job and Rondon can. He could play off Rondon and would probably benefit like Perez has but without a target man to hold up the ball and bring others into the game, we would be useless!

Your right Gayle can’t do that job, but he can play alongside someone who can hold the ball, attacker or midfielder. your assumption is that Rafa’s still going to be here and Rondon’s going to be signed. Not sure on either of these, however time will tell.
