We wrote a report last night on the 90 min report that said there was a deadlock with Newcastle becasue Rafa wanted £100M each season for transfer funds.
And he wanted that clause written into his contract and the £100M did not include funds he can get from selling players.
We doubt that’s an accurate portrayal of what’s happening.
One way to look at it is how little Rafa has had to spend ver the last two seasons, and it’s minuscule.
If Rafa gets £50M a year plus funds he can get selling players that’s so much more than he’s been given over the last two years in the Premier League.
He will definitely want cast-iron guarantees on some aspects of his contract because it seems that Ashley reneged on some of his promises to Rafa over the last couple of years.
Rafa did not get every penny the club generates – as one example of that.
Rafa Benitez – remains in talks with Mike Ashley
Heres what we did in the last two summer transfer windows.
Here’s what we did last summer.
|Ki Sung-yueng||Free agent||Swansea|
|Martin Dubravka||£4.0M||Sparta Prague|
|Salomon Rondon||Season loan||West Brom|
|Transfer Fees paid out||£22.5M|
|Mikel Merino||£10.0M||Real Sociedad|
|Jack Colback||Season loan||Nottingham Forest|
|Dwight Gayle||Season loan||West Brom|
|Henri Saivet||Season loan||Bursaspor|
|Transfer Fees into club||£43.0M|
|Net Spend||-£20.5M (profit)|
And here’s what we did in the summer of 2017 when Rafa was really annoyed.
|Javier Manquillo||£4.5M||Atletico Madrid|
|Mikel Merino||Loan - season||Borussia Dortmund|
|Transfer Fees In||£34.5M|
|Vurnon Anita||Released||Aston Villa|
|Haris Vuckic||Released||FC Twente|
|Lubo Satka||Released||FC DAC 1904 |
|Kevin Mbabu||£1.0M||Young Boys|
|Matz Sels||Loan - season||Anderlecht|
|Adam Armstrong||Loan - season||Bolton|
|Lewis Gibson||£1.0M initially||Everton|
|Daryl Murphy||£2.0M||Nottingham Forest|
|Ivan Toney||Loan - season||Wigan Athletic|
|Siem de Jong||£4.0M||Ajax|
|Grant Hanley||£3.5M||Norwich City|
|Tim Krul||Loan - season||Brighton|
|Achraf Lazaar||Loan - season||Benevento|
|Transfer Fees Out||£22.5M|
The net spend over those last two summer transfer windows was a profit of just over £8M.
The figures don’t include loan deals of players coming and going, and they would tend to cancel each other out in any case.
Ashley did relent last January to bring in Miguel Almiron for up to £21M, so that was good news but probably an attempt by the owner to get Rafa to sign on this summer.
We don’t think it’s the transfer funds that is the big problem with the long-running negotiations.
Rafa wants to have control of the transfer funds to use as he sees fit.
And he wants to spend it on players over 30 if he thinks that’s good for the team.
Mike Ashley does not want to give up that level of control on the finances.
That’s closer to what the deadlock is about.
What do you think?
