The Northern Echo are reporting that Rafa Benitez will try to sign 21-year-old Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham this summer.
But only if Aston Villa don’t become a Premier League club again in Monday’s playoff final against Frank Lampard’s Derby County.
Abraham has spent another excellent season on loan – this time with Villa, and it looks like Villa will have first refusal on the striker if they are promoted Monday.
He’s scored 26 goals in 39 Championship games – not a bad record at all.
The report also says that signing him will not be dependent on Rafa staying at Newcastle, but we find it hard to believe Rafa can walk away from Newcastle at this stage.
But it could happen.
The manager has been keen on the striker since he thought we had signed him on loan two years ago.
Rafa had met with him at St George’s Park where Tammy was on International duty with the England U21 squad and thought he had the loan all wrapped up with Abraham very positive.
But it looks like negligence by the Newcastle hierarchy allowed him to slip away, and he joined Swansea City on loan, and they were relegated that season.
Abraham is a good striker, and he will only get better if he joins a Rafa managed Newcastle club.
Not sure what the price would be and Chelsea are in difficulties with not being able to sign players this summer – so that could complicate Abraham leaving the club.
We’ll have to wait and see, but if Villa win on Monday, he will likely sign for Villa.
