We’ve noticed that when Rafa rates a player, he keeps going after them until he can sign them.
The first time Rafa wanted to sign Irish International James McCarthy of Everton was way back in January of 2017 when Rafa wanted to buy the recently departed Andros Townsend and James McCarthy.
But Mike Ashley refused to sanction any deal thinking the squad was good enough to be promoted the following May.
He was right, but this is the way Ashley has run the club – spending the least amount of money possible while trying to keep Newcastle as a Premier League club.
It hasn’t worked for 12 years, but he still keeps doing it and proving he should not be the owner of a Premier League club.
Since then the 28-year-old Glaswegian suffered a broken leg on January 20 in an attempt to block a shot on goal by Salomon Rondon.
Newcastle want Everton’s James McCarthy this summer
It resulted in the striker accidentally breaking McCarthy’s leg.
The 41 times capped Republic of Ireland International was ruled out for the rest of the 2017–2018 season and Rondon was in deep distress on the field.
According to an exclusive in TEAMtalk today Rafa wants to sign James this summer.
McCarthy is now back to full fitness after an injury-ridden time at Everton but Rafa is good with players that seem to get injuries, and we may be able to get the very talented McCarthy for a decent fee.
And James will have something to prove at Newcastle, so that’s always good – Rafa will help him do just that.
McCarthy wants to leave Everton, with manager Marco Silva not having James in his plans for the Goodison Park club.
In fact, McCarthy has hardly played over the last two seasons for the Toffees (7 times in all and only once last season) so it’s a bit of a risk.
But McCarthy has always been an accomplished player ever since he came into the Premier League with Wigan back in 2009.
If Ashley is still the owner, it may be difficult for Rafa to persuade him to pay maybe £15M (it could be less than that) for a player who turns 30 in September.
If we have new owners, then it’s likely they will trust Rafa’s judgment on transfer targets this summer.
What do you think?

The EPL Rules and the EFL Rules are similar, although there are variations between them. Both sets of Rules have developed reasonably significantly over the last ten years. Those developments have usually been a response to particular cases that have come before the EPL or EFL, or concerns that have arisen following market events and the need to pre-empt issues arising. Whereas ten years ago, the owners’ and directors’ test in English football was seen as simply a “tick box”, it has begun to develop away from that. There are now starting to emerge areas where a more subjective judgment is needed in relation to the application of the Rules. In the US sport leagues, often the leagues retain tight control of club ownership, and apply a rigorous subjective test to anyone who wishes to become an owner or part-owner. The EPL and EFL will not want to block takeovers that are overall seen as beneficial for the clubs involved; but it is expected that the EPL and EFL will continue to move gradually more to a model requiring more subjective decision-making over the coming years.
It is also noted that there is little transparency in the application of the Rules, as neither the EPL nor EFL publish information about applicants, although there is often press speculation. This is understandable as anyone who fails to satisfy the Rules is unlikely to want publicity. It is noted that there are a growing number of applicants who have been rejected (although the details largely remain private). However, it may be useful in the future if the EPL and EFL were to publish a report from time to time detailing the number of applicants handled each year, the number of applicants that have been rejected, and the grounds for such rejection (on a no names basis).

In relation to the assessment of his compliance with [the owners’ and directors’ test in the EPL Rules] (and/or any similar or equivalent rules of the Football League or the Football Association) at any time, he has:
failed to provide all relevant information [both in relation to himself or any other individual who is acting as a director and who has not been disclosed, including any person on whose behalf he is acting]; or
provided false, misleading or inaccurate information.

Comment #95Cor, it’s getting difficult to catch up on the blog now. Love it when it gets bouncing like this.
Micky’s got you all dancing on beds of nails. Nowt to worry about at all, it’ll come out later anyway probably but now’s not the right time.
Certainly doesn’t affect what’s going on with Sheik Khaled and the BZG right now.

Comment #98GS…I’ve just waded into this, but it seems you’re saying that not only you, but others have commented on G2 and also that no one questions him…which is it?
Maybe no one questions him much anymore as they know what he’s on about…not a lot….and it’s fairly harmless, albeit not to everyone’s humour?
Truth is, G2 got everyone silenced once they singed up to his Manly Man Inc monthly newsletter…a bargain at just €7pcm.

Comment #113Simon Jordan was on takksport on Monday night and his view was there would not be a problem with the fit and proper review. He didn’t elaborate or explain why.
BZG have directly implicated Ashley and the Premier League in their latest statement and there hasn’t been any denials, yet. However to do this without any validity would surely expose the group to some form of litigation.
No-one would make such a bold statement if false. Dare I believe?

Comment #116Novo…I’m with you…seems a bold statement to make if based on total lies. Could perhaps be a plan on the buyers part to pressure Ashley…although I hope not as that doesn’t usually unfold too well.
