With the recent news that Joselu is almost certain to leave Newcastle in the next few days, we would hope to see some of the other fringe players moved along as well.
We were very impressed with how quickly Newcastle were able to move Joselu considering his high wages of £40K per week. But fair play to Joselu who it looks like will take a wage cut to play for Alaves.
Another player whose time is most certainly up at Newcastle is local lad Jack Colback. Jack is on similar wages to Joselu however his predicament is a bit bleaker than that of the Spanish striker.
Jack has quite a contentious relationship with Rafa Benitez after the two had a disagreement about the player’s future two years ago. Rafa had transfer opportunities lined up but Jack was reluctant to leave his hometown club.
This led to the midfielder being banished from the first team and the revelation that Colback will not play for Newcastle again while Benitez is the manager.
He has been on loan at Nottingham Forest the past year and a half. His performances have been outstanding for the former European Champions.
This past season he started 38 games in the league with 3 goals and 2 assists.
Jack Colback– played very well for Forest in the Championship
It would be no wonder if Nottingham Forest are desperate to sign Jack permanently this summer. Since the player reportedly has one year left on his contract and is out of favor with his manager, Martin O’Neill must feel he can get a quality midfielder for a very cut-rate fee.
In fact, young Forest midfielder Ryan Yates recently spoke of Jack Colback and his desire to have him return to City Ground next season:
“Of course, we’d all like him back. He’s a top player and he was arguably our best player last season,
“To have those type of players in the team is only going to help us, so obviously we want those sort of players.”
When asked if he has tried to get into Jack’s ear about a permanent move, Ryan responded:
“A little bit. But I think he knows deep down what he wants to do”
With Rafa Benitez’s future still up in the air, Jack Colback may be playing the long game on any future decisions. If Benitez does not sign, he may feel that he still has a future on Tyneside.
Therefore we do not think Jack will make a decision on his future until the manager situation is settled.
While he will not be the only Geordie sweating out Rafa’s decision, he could be the only one hoping to see Rafa walk.
