There is a report in L’Equippe that Newcastle United have had a failed bid for French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The report claims that Watford, Southampton, Everton, Cardiff City, as well as Newcastle have all failed with bids of between €20-€25M for 21-year old. We find the inclusion of recently relegated Cardiff City strange as they certainly would not have recently had a bid in for the player.
Newcastle were linked with Mateta this past June before he joined current club Mainz.
His star certainly has risen this past year after joining Mainz for €10M in July from Lyon. He has been outstanding this past season in the Bundesliga scoring 14 goals in league 34 appearances.
After a sluggish start in Germany, he caught his stride and started to bang the goals in more consistently in November.
He certainly seems to know how to find the back of the net as the season before, when on-loan at Le Havre in Ligue 2, he scored 19 goals in 37 appearances.
Jean-Philippe Mateta– has attracted a flurry of bids from England
The report does intimate that Mainz would be tempted to sell at closer to between €35-40M. Were not sure if he would be a good buy at that price however.
It is interesting to note that Mateta ended up being the replacement of our very own Yoshinori Muto who left Mainz to join Newcastle last summer.
