Dutch Journalist Claims Newcastle Have Scouted Ajax Star

There is an article in Sky Sports about the excellent crop of players at Champions League semi-finalists Ajax. The article runs through the current squad and rates their transfer potential.

The player that is of interest to Newcastle fans in the article is Ajax’s Dutch attacking midfielder Donny van de Beek.

This is what journalist Marcel van der Kraan wrote about van de Beek:

This is probably the biggest chance of a move happening this summer. If I had to put my money on a player leaving, it would be Donny van de Beek.

He is a perfect backup for many clubs. He is not the No 1 for most clubs – I have seen scouts from Tottenham, Man United, Everton, Liverpool and Newcastle at Ajax Amsterdam Arena watching him a number of times.

He is an ideal player for the Premier League, he has the skills, like most Ajax players, and a big tank so he can run all day. But all these clubs have a priority list and Van de Beek seems the perfect backup for the big clubs.

The reference to van de Beek being a back-up may be a bit misleading. Keep in mind this article was about which players at Ajax would be looking at big moves this summer like that of Frenkie De Jong’s move to Barcelona for £65M.

So the article went through current Ajax stars such as Matthijs de Ligt, David Neres, and Hakim Ziyech who will have big price tags on them. While van de Beek may not be at that level. He is a very talented player.

Donny van de Beek– Newcastle scouts have been watching him

Donny van de Beek is a product of the world reknown Ajax Academy which is one of the best academies for young prospects in existence.

Van de Beek is a twenty-two year old attacking midfielder who joined the Amsterdam club’s academy as an eleven-year old in 2008.

This past season he made 57 appearances with 17 goals and 14 assists. Overall he has played 138 times for Ajax with 31 goals.

He made his international debut in November 2017 and has 5 caps for the Netherlands.

It is comforting to know that Newcastle’s scouting team have watched Ajax this season. If only to give us some relief that the scouting aspect of the club may not be as inept in their duties as some others at Newcastle are.

Truly any club worth their salt in the top divisions of Europe should be scouting Ajax.

While he would cost a lot of money, that may not be an issue in the coming weeks if the Bin Zayed Group can finally take over Newcastle.

Donny van de Beek is an outstanding player and is of the standard that this club should rightly be linked with.

I am at work so haven’t had a proper look, but there are some posts on Twitter stating Ash has pulled that company he set up to sell the land on Strawberry tce

    Anyone else read this;

This is intriguing (while suggesting nothing in particular about anything)

Mike Ashley’s Newco 40 was the vehicle that held Strawberry Place. It was in the process of closing uo. After the land was sold (pending planning permission)

Now that closure has been withdrawn.

Hard to muster any enthusiasm for reported transfer targets when so much is up in the air.

Wynsleap, how do you know he hasn’t? You can’t buy and sell players, during a takeover because the price includes all assets. Players are assets. He may well have a list already – he probably has – but who pays for these players, Ashley or BZG? Until the takeover does it doesn’t happen, I don’t imagine we’ll see any movement. Just one of those things we have to wait for matey. Annoying as it is, we have little choice.

Could learn a thing or two from Ajax, we haven’t produced a lot of young players for many a year and when we do get a one they never get a chance.

Wyntheleap – I’d love our academy to produce half as many as Ajax. Must have a fantastic setup there.

If this comes off, and I’ve had a word with the powers that be, you’ll be beatified. Imagine, Saint Michael of Dubai and St James’ Park.

Bambama and other comforters have been mentioned too. We could have some celebrating to do…… If the gods are with us.

Hands together, eyes closed and say after me …Ashley out!

For no other reason than to keep spirits up (particularly my own) I am convinced it’s going to happen. Too many solid positives and the negatives are assumptions and pessimism. Onwards and upwards men, once more into the breach, dear friends, once more. Cry “God, for Harry, Newcastle and St James’s Park”

We’re stuck in purgatory and the lack of information makes things seem much worse. Ashley has got us used to expecting the him to pull everything out from under us at the last moment like the world’s most vindictive magician. It’s enough to drive the best of us insane. One day he will be gone and I hope this is the time…
