Newcastle Reported After 27-Year-Old Serbian Defensive Midfielder

Portuguese newspaper O Jogo are reporting today that Newcastle are interested in signing Nemanja Gudelj from Guangzhou Evergrande.

Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao Football Club is a professional Chinese football club that plays in the Chinese Super League.

The 27-year-old defensive midfielder has played for Serbia 22 times and was born in Belgrade, SFR Yugoslavia.

In August of last year, the former Ajax player was loaned out to Sporting Lisbon for last season when he played 43 times in all competitions with one goal and one assist.

27-year-old Nemanja Gudelj from Guangzhou Evergrande

His contract with his Chinese club runs out at the end of the month so he will become a free agent at that time.

Real Betis, Fenerbahce, and Galatasaray are also reported to be keen on the player, and Sporting Lisbon believe they will not be able to compete with those clubs for wages and a signing-on fee for the player.

The player makes a massive €5M (£4.5M) net in wages at the Chinese club (how ridiculous), so he would be looking for big wages elsewhere.

However, he may not get them at Newcastle.

He would need to decide if he wants to make as much money as possible in football or become a top player at Newcastle under our world-class manager Rafa Benitez.

Sometimes both are even possible.

Rafa wants players who want to improve as much as possible if he signs them for Newcastle.

Comments welcome.

On the article from The Mag I think the last line said it all

“But the ultimate overarching fact is that Newcastle United is a club which is leaving its fans in the dark, and if journalists cannot break through this wall of silence as they should be, then no one can”

… and there you have it – they are not allowed and have never been in the inner circle and if there were it would of course be KBA wall to wall. – “should be” well that I suspect is easier said than done.

This as everyone knows is not your typical club with loads of leaks and potential sources ( like it was in Gibson’s day cosying up with players)

Even journalists like Caulkin and Hardy who many on here admire have no take because quite simply there is a wall of silence and for a source well you need a source – best bet would be some on here but their snippets come from existing aquaintanceships.

I am not holding up the standard of journalism on local papers as being even average but I reckon this must be the hardest beat to be on with continual lack of transparency by club and a fanbase rabid for stories.

This last month has been even harder with lack of contact with players, no prematch press calls and the terse “no comment” from apparently anywhere in Club.

Now if it had been The Mirror Group given the exclusive and not The Sun then the local journo’s might have been at the table or at least picking up any scraps fed to them.

After the local papers were harshly and unjustifiably banned for extensively featuring the protests a few years back they haven’t got an open door at all and press conferences ( like fans groups) are controlled.

I am not for scapegoating the local press hereand they make an easy target but if it’s anyone to blame it’s Ashley and we all know that
