When Newcastle United first unveiled their new home kit on Wednesday, many fans noticed a reference in the advertising that left some a bit puzzled.
The write-up about the new shirt called on Newcastle fans to support “Rafa Benitez’ men” in the new replica home shirt.
It also mentioned how the team were looking to make this season a successful one “under the famous Spaniard”.
This tactic of using Benitez to sell shirts did not sit too well with some fans. They considered this to be a disingenuous ploy as Benitez has less than two weeks remaining on his contract.
Some fans though found comfort in seeing Rafa’s heralded name still being attached to the club. They saw this as a possible sign of a new contract on the horizon.
Well, the advertising write-up was suddenly changed yesterday with the removal of all references to Rafa Benitez.
This move left fans even more bewildered and some in a panic. Many saw this as confirmation that Rafa Benitez was indeed leaving Newcastle.
Here is a comparison of the two different ads for the new home shirt:
Below is a couple of exchanges on Twitter with Newcastle United’s Head of Media and Content Lee Marshall about the original ad for the sale of the new home shirt:
Hi, thanks for flagging this up. The retail website doesn’t fall within the remit of my team and I but I’ll make some enquiries.
— Lee Marshall (@LeeMarshall9) June 19, 2019
It’ll be written by a third party rather than a colleague at the club but I do appreciate what you’re saying. Leave it with me. Thanks again for bringing it to my attention ??
— Lee Marshall (@LeeMarshall9) June 19, 2019
While we are not sure if this is of any significance to Rafa Benitez’ tenure at Newcastle, this tweet exchange does seem to be the origin of the removal of his name from the ads.
While it may have been done to ease some unrest, in true Newcastle fashion it has led to even more confusion and despondency amongst the fanbase.

Exactly, Caulkins sources would want the BZG bid to fail especially if they’ve invested cash into trying to put a deal in place.
Remember last week Luke Edward’s told us of a 3rd bidder who dropped out ‘for now’. They’ve obviously felt they were being strung along and realise they’re at the back of the queue and don’t want to throw good money after bad at trying to get a deal through.

Get out of our club you slug!!!!
George Culkin is a knob!! I still remember him saying Staveley is definitely buying!!! He never gets transfer stories correct either so why listen to him???
Yet we all slit our wrists over his tweet!
My Faith in all this is BZG….if it has fallen over they would not stay silent! They are a respected company and people who are not linked to Jabba..

It just doesn’t sit right with everything else and Caulkin got it wrong with Staveley. Is this the same source from then? Hardly reliable if it is.

Comment #12Also if we are to believe that KBA are a super powered PR firm, how come the Tapeworm is so hated not only amongst NUFC fans but in the business world too.
The only place that the Tapeworm gets an easy ride is within the media, and let’s face it, journalism in this country has had plenty of scandals and gone are the days of reporters actually going out in the field and fact finding, they can just surf the net now.
Most of them don’t even google stuff they just flat out make it up.

Comment #19I actually don’t really know what Ashley is playing at because he has made so many bizarre decisions in the past. I really cannot believe though that he is setting up expensive pretend sales to cover his tracks in not spending on transfers.

Comment #21I don’t know if Rafa will stay or go, but I think this current situation has always been inevitable. Rafa’s people are probably leaking stories off the record to all their press contacts about how unhappy he is with the offer. How he is about to leave & go to China etc. Ashley has team out in the form of Wise & Harmison doing his PR. The good thing is neither parties are saying anything on the record, so no bridges have been permanently burned. It is currently a high stakes poker game and 1 of them needs to blink.

Comment #27Not sure anyone has mentioned the possibility that Caulkin’s source could well be Amanda Staveley. She said fairly recently that she still had an interest in buying NUFC. It could well be that she’s still in touch with George Caulkin and is using him to sow a few seeds of doubt.

You really need a new focus or you’re in serious trouble of becoming completely irrelevant.

Comment #36It’s a strange thing that the same way Ashley moves the goalposts, so does toon22. It used to be that if you had a place name in your moniker that you were definitely Ashley PR.
It seems that these days, all you have to do is come out on the Night Shift. Suddenly, droppy, kev, beermonkey are all implicated.
i and sheikhen but not stirred seem to have got away with it for now.

You don’t see the point in listing because you can’t.
We’re all aware that he is a sh*thouse and absolutely cannot be trusted. But the only sale that has ever seemed as genuine as this one was Staveley last year, the one ‘respected journalist’ Caulkin told us was a certainty.
As I said the media are the only ones who repeat your line that it’s never MA’s fault.
Anyway I’m off to bed now I’m having breakfast with Mike and Keith Tomorrow, then we’re picking up Rio and Keysy to go to a BBQ at Wiseys place.

Comment #40But you clearly do….otherwise you wouldn’t respond.
I’ve told you many times before, I would be extremely happy to be paid for my contribution – unfortunately, I’m not.
My profession is not blogs or sports wear or NUFC…..I’m in a completely different industry.
I comment simply because I can (same as you)
The difference being you are too scared to come out and have a serious conversation about your thoughts because you absolutely know you cannot defend what you say 🙂
You mentioned earlier, your favorite colour was yellow – I get that, it makes perfect sense 🙂
