Luke Edwards was on Talk Sport and had some big revelations to make about just how irresponsible Mike Ashley and the board have been.
Below is a excerpt from his interview:
“They thought he would stay, something dramatic has changed in 24 hours.”
“Rafa refused to meet them twice. Ashley intervened and pulled the plug.”
“Newcastle don’t have a shortlist.”
Great detail from @LukeEdwardsTele on Rafa Benitez’s exit from #NUFC. ???? pic.twitter.com/PNA5i3AMcH
— talkSPORT (@talkSPORT) June 24, 2019
So it looks like smug Mike Ashley has been left without another option for manager. He thought that he could exploit Rafa’s love of this club and its fans and wait him out.
Apparently the reporting this weekend was accurate that Rafa had enough of Mike Ashley’s condescension and there would be no further negotiations.
As it became clear that Rafa Benitez was not willing to endure another of Mike Ashley’s charades, he pulled the plug and had Newcastle make their terse announcement.
Now the club is in shambles. With no direction and no leadership. It was Rafa Benitez who kept this club afloat while Mike Ashley was his derelict self.
He has flirted with fire and now he may have just gotten burned. And like the great destructor that he is, he will burn everything around him.

Comment #41Droppy, it wasn’t a personal attack on you specifically. Stop getting your knickers in a twist. This is the boycott all over again. Nobody willing to make a stand but wanting to twine on.

Comment #42Takeover is off announcement is what’s coming soon. Maybe around mid July. So that Ashley wouldn’t have to spend too much on the transfer window and let the takeover rumors carry on.
Pre season is starting with no manager in place and no direction.
Typical under Ashley.

Comment #48We all knew that Rafa wouldn’t sign for Ashley unless some compromise, on his demands to take the club forward, was made by Ashley. And we all knew that Ashley wouldn’t compromise. Ergo this news was always coming. I’m in agreement that Ashley thought the impending ‘sale’ and Rafa’s love for the club and fans would sucker him in to signing. More power to Rafa, he leaves with my respect and gratitude.

Comment #55Luke Edwards last two articles:
1) Newcastle Utd to make one final attempt to secure Rafa
2) If Rafa goes to China it’ll be for all the wrong reasons.
Both articles make a point of saying things like “Rafa isn’t blameless” or “Rafa doesn’t walk on water”. Smells iffy to me.
This out of the blue statement just doesn’t sit right. I think the deal is agreed and part of the sale was for Ash to take the blame for Benitez leaving. Too much going on. Weird associations with a player supposedly agreeing terms, a manager jumping to the top of the odds list. Compound that weirdness with the fact that both those came from unrelated and very bizarre sources but only in the last week said manager was heaping praise on that player…
Am I clinging to hope? Seeing stuff that’s not there? Maybe, but none of it sits right with me still. Not because of RB leaving but just the way it’s happened. It’s like it’s occurred way too quickly.
On another note, here’s a little Benitez anecdote. My daughter was born at the RVI in February 2016. Her and mam weren’t too grand and ended up staying in the hospital for a while. Day I brought them home I came back past the ground and saw Benitez getting out of a people carrier. I said to the wife, “f*** me that’s Rafa Benitez” – she wasn’t best please cos the joy of bringing them both home was overshadowed by the joy of the club finally getting a decent manager.

Comment #56WTH is going on. How do these amateurs not have a plan B lined up? Final week of contract and they had to have known they were still miles apart on agreeing to anything. If they knew they wouldn’t give him what he needs to take us forward, why have they not started lining up a new replacement. Absolutely pathetic how horribly this club is run. No only giving f-all about the fans and being completely incompetent in managing this club but clearly lacking all common sense. Absolutely fed up with it all. Either a takeover is around the corner or MA and his cronies are even stupider than I ever imagined (And thats an incredibly low bar that they’ve managed to trip over!!!) #MikeAshleyOUT!!!

My knickers are perfectly ok too.
I took it for what it was. Nothing personal at all, my responses are sarcastic. We’re just words on a screen to each other.
I have had similar discussions with other posters. I gave my ticket up 5 years ago, won’t go back until he’s gone. I don’t blame people who do still attend though, it’s a choice and for some it’s too much to give up. I respect that.
I would love to switch off my feelings for a club I first watched as a small kid in 1982 but I can’t.
Everyone is raw as hell today so these little scraps will happen.
Do I think we need some kind of boycott or other action? Absolutely!
Do I think it will happen?
Sadly not.
No hard feelings mate.

Comment #67The little worm Charnley is complicit in all of this .
He does Ashleys bidding and has the audacity to sit with the disgrace that is Ashley , hes no Geordie .
Charnley is a Judas.
Ashley should never be allowed to set foot in St James ‘ park again, we as Supporters should make sure he doesn’t.
I wonder if the nobody will stop me supporting and going to the game diehards will surface today ? What say you now ?
Someone said in the week here that they who attend despite being walked on by Ashley are Killing the club ,
how right they were.
Don’t go along blindly feeding the fat B’stard. He hates you and us .
No ambition , he’s a walking disaster .
The Magpie group are holding a protest at St’James’ Park tonight. It’s going to be carried out vehemently I imagine , and rightly so.

Comment #68So if the club is in the process of being sold it looks like the new owners didn’t want Rafa for whatever reason.
It’s inconceivable that any prospective new owners would not have asked to see Rafa’s current and unsigned contract during the negotiations.
Newcastle would not be the first or last club to find that new owners have their own people and their own ideas and have already tapped up a compliant replacement manager.

Comment #73So bits emerging but still largely speculation except It seems no shortlist and plug pulled a week away from pre-season.
Running a business? – do this sort of careless unplanned manoevering at SD and watch it go down the pan.
Just going with Luke Edwards spiel on Talksport ( on youtube) and not factoring takeover into equation it’s another Ashley gamble after misreading of Rafa’s integrity and loyalty and so sure of himself that no viable Plan B ( as if there could be anyway!)
Unless something happens quickly this is going to fester and fester with only worse news to follow without BZG riding to our rescue

However, if Mourinho is appointed as the next manager, it has to be a sign that the takeover is happening doesn’t it ?
There’s surely no way that he would be prepared to work under the restrictions imposed by Ashley.

Comment #76There isn’t a manager on the planet they could bring in that would compare to Rafa even pep wouldn’t be the same. I love the man more than any player who I ever saw play for Newcastle (except hatem ben arfa) We were such a shambles when he took over and he turned us into one of the best defences in the premiership with a crap squad. I’ve no doubt had he been given money he would have greatly improved our attack as well. He did it all without making any noise or complaints. Just a genius at managing a football club, he’s so underrated by the rest of the footballing world.

Comment #77If Ashley doesn’t go we’re nailed on for relegation next year.
The club MUST be about to be sold, it has to be Ashley’s last chance to sell before he completely screws the club beyond repair. It wont survive another relegation!!
The whole mess will come down like a house of cards in the next 6 months if he remains owner.
O what fun we didn’t have.

Genuine supporter ? I think not !
The sooner this parasite leaves our club the better. We have lost a WORLD CLASS MANAGER because of his greedy cheeky penny pinching attitude towards Rafa.
Rafa is no mug . What you gonna do now Fat Lad ? Run away to the USA and count the money you have stolen from our club ?
I hope the FA investigate you in depth .
