Former Newcastle Manager Offers Opinion On Magpies Job

The Shields Gazette have reported on an interview that Sam Allardyce gave on Talk Sport.

Sam was the manager of Newcastle United when Mike Ashley bought the club in 2007. Allardyce was not Ashley’s preferred choice and after a poor run through Christmas was let go in early January 2008.

Allardyce will know all about what’s its like at Newcastle even though his tenure was short as he is also a former Sunderland manager.

This is what Big Sam had to say on Talk Sport:

“I think we all know the pitfalls of the Newcastle job but you don’t turn it down if it’s offered, if you have any ambition.

“I left Bolton to go to the next level. There has been a lack of real success for many, many years.

“The fans have turned to be more patient – they realise what the club has become.

“It was all about winning a cup competition or Europe when I was there.”

This is a very interesting series of comments by Allardyce. The “if you have any ambition” part sticks out sorely when talking about taking the Newcastle job. The owner has no ambition so why would any ambitious manager take it.

It is a job at a big club and will realistically will only be taken by a manager who could not get a job at any other top club.

He also mentions how the fans have turned more patient as they have come to learn “what the club has become.” Yet while he was here, he boasts it was all talk about winning something.

Well Sam, why do you think that is? It is because Mike Ashley has turned the club of Kevin Keegan and Bobby Robson into a middling advertisement for Sports Direct.

Sam does go on and actually give Rafa a compliment which is somewhat surprising as the two had a contentious relationship:

“Rafa did a fantastic job keeping in the PL.

“The hard thing for Mike Ashley is getting someone in to manage the club, what can a new manager achieve to take the club forward? That will difficult.”

Sam is spot on here that it is going to be difficult to replace Rafa Benitez. In fact, for Mike Ashley it will be impossible. For as long as he is the owner, any new manager will looked upon with suspicious eyes.

Sam finally says what every person is thinking when asked if he would consider taking the position:

“I don’t think so. In my time, I was between Freddy Shepherd and Mike taking it. Alan Shearer and Kevin Keegan have gone back and not done as well as expected. It’s all hypothetical – I won’t be offered it.”

    Thanks very much.

It must amaze all of us how all the press and pundits sit here under the illusion that we have football people running the club. You could write what the four stoohes know about football on the back of a stamp. When i talk to my little man, and no thats not a euphemism, i know know how rafa felt when talking to the stooges. You almost get the impression they understand what your saying, almost but not quite. What an utter embarrassment. Its a good job we are as good of set of fans as we are otherwise im sure rafa would have jacked it in long before he did. Cant wait to see who that bald muppet picks next.

    Pardew
    Moyes
    McClaren
    Gerrard
    Redfearn
    Gattuso
    Blanc
    Carver

Those chosen by Wise as candidates. Although none have proved much in management, Wise believes they all have what it takes to work under Ashley, himself & Carr.

    Jail,

Rafa is a successful manager near the end of his career who wants one last shot at winning something.

The type of young manager I’m talking about will have totally different ambitions and expectations to Rafa.

Plus, I don’t believe there will be any big exodus of players because there isn’t one of our squad, bar Longstaff and possibly Schar, who would be of any interest to the top 6.

Any move for any another player would be a step down from playing in front of 52,000 fans every week.

Agree with you, still pretty confident that the sale will still go ahead. I think the Rafa contract (gutted he’s gone) and the sale were two separate issues and there is enough evidence that the sale is progressing behind the scenes.

The squad Rafa was building, with a 2 or three quality additions, has a core which strong enough to survive. The key is the quality of manager who we get.

Your right as well about supporting the next manager, Rafa has such a strong relationship with the fans whoever takes the reigns is in for a tough start, Like taking over from Ferguson at Manure, Moyes was always on a looser. Would Moyes want to follow Rafa?

would it be a step down going to an ambitious club like Wolves for example? Or even Brighton/Watford .. they had a proper go at the FA cup at least. I know if I was a player I’d rather have played trying to win something than just in front of a big crowd

    Return of the Geordi,

If MA brings in a Moyes, Pulis or similar he’ll be making a massive mistake.

Unlike Rafa, a bad start to the first five games of the season and that type of manager would be rounded on worse than we could imagine.

    Barkel,

You are surmising that the players think they will be on a sinking ship without Rafa – I don’t buy that either.

Yes, they’ll be gutted he’s gone, but they’ll believe they are part of a decent squad that showed their potential in the second half of the season. No way will they believe they are relegation fodder.

Unless they are sold over their heads I doubt many, if any, will push for a move until January at the earliest.

Surely the first order of business is to get a new manager? This should be done before training opens next Monday. That gives them 4 working days. Is that enough for an incompetent owner and some sycophants who know nothing about football? Of course not but the buffoons will carry on. Who will it be then? I’m betting on Moyes. It has to be someone new, not a recycle such as Big Sam or Hoots. Whoever it is had better be prepared for trouble.

I can see Perez wanting to leave now. His stock has never been higher and with Rafa gone he may revert to his previous form. Will we be able to hold onto any of the better players? And will Ashley try to flog some of them to take a last payout?

I wouldn’t say a sinking ship exactly but certainly a club that lacks any ambition to do any more than survive. It is extremely clear that “the club” only want to purchase players under 26 years of age with the sole intention to sell them on as soon as their value increases, similar to the Southampton model. Clearly there is no ambition in cups either, what’s the best we’ve done in the last 12 years? Well beaten in the 1/4 final of the Europa

Can Ashley get it together enough to hire someone decent quickly? It doesn’t seem likely on previous performances. Especially with the front man being Lee Chutney. Like sending out one of the Three Stooges to get the job done.

I’m trying to hang onto hope there’ll be a takeover but it’s hard. A couple of weeks ago my confidence level that it would go through was maybe 80%. Now it’s more like 5%. Still, a shred of hope is better than none.

I think the BZG interest and intentions are genuine and I have no reason to think they lack the money or will to make a deal. I have serious concerns that Ashley’s greed and desire to keep his claws in the club through advertising or merchandising might result in them walking away or him capriciously pulling the plug. As we’ve seen with his treatment of Rafa this week, Ashley has no respect for anyone and I doubt that will sit well with seriously rich middle-eastern buyers.

And if that happens it’s hard to see what hope remains. Whichever body he brings in as manager won’t be Rafa and will have to be willing to operate on a shoestring, without ambition, following orders from bosses who have zero footballing knowledge, and settle for annual relegation battles. A grim, miserable, joyless existence. There’s no doubt about that. All the proof anyone needs is plainly there in 12 years of Ashley’s soul-destroying regime. The club in it’s cheap, tacky ‘sports-direct’ business outlet guise rather than a proper football club.

Sorry to be downbeat but some days it’s harder to hang onto hope than others.

The time to do something was years ago!

I’m not going to lift a finger to get Ashley out, mocked jeered and sneered at when I’ve been to protests etc, I tried more than once.

The people moaning about Rafa are the same people who’d do nothing to get Ashley out if asked.

Put up and shut up because a lot of you are embarrassing yourselves, you should be ashamed that you’ve allowed this to happen without lifting a finger.

Enablers, some of you may as well work for Bishop or Ashley because you’ve sat and allowed the club to be tret like a unloved toy by a shitehawk. Shame on you!

    Jail,

    Let’s be realistic,

Without massive investment in the next 2/3 years – at least two to three hundred million in fees and god knows what in wages – our chances under any manager of finishing in the top 6 are pretty remote. And there is no guarantee – as Everton have proved – that spending that type of money gets you there.

So, unless we get a takeover from someone prepared to spend that level of money, my expectations (not hopes) are that we’ll comfortably stay in the Prem and have a good cup run each season and pray that we win one.

Playing entertaining attacking football would be a bonus although not a necessity – as Rafa proved. KK proved that doing that doesn’t guarantee a trophy either.

I would expect a younger manager with more to prove would have the same level of expectation but I’d also like to think he would have the confidence and ambition to believe that he could do a Leicester and pull off another miracle.
