The Daily Mail are now reporting that Newcastle United have contacted Porto manager Sergio Conceicao about his interest in the vacant Newcastle manager position.
Earlier there was a very brief report in Sky Sports that Sergio Conceicao was interested in the position.
The Daily Mail confirm that piece of information but also add the following:
Sportsmail understands Conceicao has been spoken to by officials from the St James’s Park club and he would open to making the move from Portugal.
If true this would be excellent news. We would love for a young manager to take the helm at Newcastle even if some think that would pose a greater risk.
Sergio Conceicao– should I succeed Rafa at Newcastle?
Sergio Conceicao has done excellently in his progression as a manager and has turned Porto around after financial difficulties and poor finishes.
Football BH’s Daniel Lusted did this excellent write up of Conceicao’s unique tactical style. It is superb and in depth. One thing that we gather from reading it is we will definitely need some new fullbacks in he comes in, but we already needed that.
There is also this video from Tifo Football from the 2017/18 season prior to Porto winning the Portuguese Super Liga for the first time in 5 years which further details his tactical style.

Comment #3I think it very plausible that the ongoing speculation regarding a sale is the sole cause of losing Rafa. Conceivably Ashley couldn’t guarantee Rafa anymore than the club has in its coffers without jeopardizing the process, nor could he guarantee that the sale would fully progress, or that the new owners wanted him. In that case Rafa had little incentive to stay.
Regardless, once this saga is over, Ashley must either be gone or back the new manager at a proper tilt at a trophy.
In the meantime protest.

Comment #4Mmm, a trophy, that’d be nice, but let me rephrase that, “a proper tilt at good, entertaining, competitive football”.

Comment #8Maybe better to have started #3 with “I think it very plausible that the ongoing speculation regarding a sale was ultimately the prime catalyst in losing Rafa.”
Anyway I’m definitely off. Goodnight.

Comment #10If this potential new manager requires certain fullbacks to implement his system, then he’s doomed to failure because Ashley won’t get him the players required. He’ll end up with some bargain bin players on loan and will be hindered by the club owner. What the new manager will have to do is look at who we already have and figure out if he can make them fit into his system.
I can’t see how anyone could look at Ashley’s record at this club and be even remotely tempted to take on this project. More so if this ever more unlikely takeover actually does happen and they get dumped by the new owners.
What an effing mess *sigh*

Comment #12What I fear is that, whoever gets the managerial job, he ( or she ) will end up getting massive flack from supporters disappointed that Rafa’s gone, whereas the flack should be directed at nobody but Ashley.

It won’t be a WUM day oooh

”Rudderless:
Castles in the Sky
Four days of guff, bluster and fiction have followed the announcement of Rafa Benitez’s exit and today we are presented with more unsubstantiated nonsense from those supposedly in the know.
Headlines suggest that Mike Ashley has set a deadline for the takeover – something that has been repeatedly reported for every supposed new suitor from Barry Moat to Amanda Staveley and every Chinese consortium, Russian oligarch and Middle Eastern group in between.
This time it’s Duncan Castles getting his name in the frame, which makes a change from Justin Allen and of course, Sky, that Ashley regularly uses as his mouthpiece.
Amid the myriad of megalomaniacs, self-publicists, fraudsters, shysters and lowlifes is a distinct lack of honesty, integrity and good intentions that this club desperately needs.
What’s that saying? Where there’s brass, there’s muck….”

Comment #28As one reflects on the clubs parlous state over night
a thought appears.
It depends on whether you believe the takeover or not
I do , but clearly understand why others don’t.
The thought is this , new owners would find a manager
as talented and popular (hence powerful) as Rafa a bit
of a risk.
I know about and understand fully the demonization of Ashley
however in this case I feel it may be the buyers who have told
the seller to engineer his departure.

For the first time I’m now having serious doubts about BZG’s previous statements.
I won’t be popular, but I don’t buy into the conspiracy theory that Ashley doesn’t want to sell the club and is just going through the motions to pi$$ the fans off and make excuses for not spending on transfers.
This is a guy who has shown he doesn’t give two fcuks about what anyone thinks, from his employees, to us fans and Rafa, to his shareholders, the City or politicians. His skin is as thick as a rhino’s.
If he didn’t want to sell the club he wouldn’t muck around pretending to, he’s got more than enough brass balls to just stick around for as long as he likes.
Which brings me back to BZG…
There has now been more than enough time for the FA to do due diligence, yet there is not a peep from them or a whistleblower in the FA to say it’s even being considered. Add that to BZG apparently not providing proof of funds for their Liverpool bid, and Chronicle sources saying Ashley hasn’t yet received proof either… and it doesn’t look good.
Ashley giving a two week deadline before he pulls the plug on a sale is, to me, a clear sign that he isn’t the one holding up or stringing out the deal – it’s BZG.
If it’s the other way round we’ll sharp find out, because once the deal is off NDA’s will be out of the window and if BZG have been strung along and dumped they’ll want to keep face and credibility by spilling the beans on Ashley.
However, I’ve got an awful feeling now that BZG, like Staveley and Kenyon before them, have been blowing hot air.

See my post above from .com, it’s happening with every supposed buyer yet you are choosing to believe a man who is a notorious liar, a man who Debenhams chose to go bust rather than do business with, is it not much more likely that what people think they are originally buying isn’t actually for sale.

Comment #37On previous manager appointments by MA,
Again, I don’t agree with the consensus opinion.
MA has appointed Keegan, Kinnear, Hughton, Pardew, Carver,Shearer, McClaren and Benitez.
The fans wanted Keegan back, Kinnear was a bufoon but as a manager he had stabilized the ship and us 12th at the time of his heart attack (not great but far better than he is given credit for), Carver’s appointment turned out to be a disaster but as SBR’s assistant he probably deserved a chance, Hughton was a success, Pardew kept us up first season and finished 5th the second before falling away and Benitez is a no brainer.
The only really big mistake was McClaren and in the context of the number of managerial mistakes by other Prem clubs over the past 12 years that is probably no worse than the norm.
That’s not me defending MA, it’s just bringing reality to the view that he only appoints washed up retreads and that he will do so again.
I said a few days ago that I think there will be plenty of young ambitious managers that will want a crack at the sleeping giant that is NUFC and I’ll stick my next out and say no way will a Pulis, Hughes or that ilk will come into consideration never mind get appointed.
And, one thing is for sure, if a new manager in the Gerrard, Viera on this Portuguese guy is appointed after MA’s two week deadline that is the definite 6 inch nail in the coffin for the takeover.
And if that happens it will be BZG who have been blowing hot takeover air, not MA.

Comment #38Probably need a manager that would be capable of taking us down at first time of asking, Ashley is going nowhere while Sky is giving him hefty checks.. the only way that stops is to drop a division or two and the TV money dries up… hey ho the fans suddenly become important as they are the only source of revenue..
Hopefully he loses a couple of hundred million in the process.

If MA has pulled the wool over BZG’s eyes and moved the goalposts etc., we’ll soon find out.
They prestige they have and covet, especially in their own country, will not allow them to go away in a whimper or silence if that is the case, they will want to protect their image and spill the beans.
If they spill the beans I’m wrong… but if the two week deadline passes, a new manager comes in on a 3 year contract and we hear nothing more from BZG… I’m right.

Comment #40So there it is. A tenure of abysmal failure and unmitigated disaster hits a new low.
Even the most pessimistic and hardened campaigners couldn’t have envisaged a shambolic summer such as this.
And who can blame Rafa and his colleagues for walking away? He did well to last as long as he did, working for one of the most difficult management groups the club has ever known – and that’s saying something. (nufc.com)
