Telegraph writer Sam Wallace has confirmed via Twitter that Aston Villa have agreed a deal with Southampton for English left-back Matthew Targett.
This is what he has just tweeted:
Southampton and Aston Villa have agreed a £14m fee for Matt Targett, rising to £17m including add-ons. Expect the deal for the left-back to go through this weekend. Good business for Saints; solid long term investment for AVFC
— Sam Wallace (@SamWallaceTel) June 29, 2019
Yesterday there were reports that Aston Villa had in fact made a bid and it looks like the bid has been accepted by Southampton
We have been linked with Matt Targett for over two years since Rafa Benitez tried to get him on loan in 2017.
This is the second reported target of ours that Aston Villa have signed this summer. Earlier this month, they signed Brazilian striker Wesley Moraes from Club Brugge for £22.5m.
As is the usual case with Newcastle, the clubs around us are making big signings while Newcastle dawdle about. This year, however, it is even worse as it looks likely no manager will be on board until at least July 17.
We don’t know if this will stall all transfer activity until the appointment of a new manager because this club is not run like proper clubs.
Newcastle could well be working on transfers we suppose since the next manager is likely not to have much of a say in any case.
Though they are likely not working on anything at all. Newcastle United is just “meh football club” to Mike Ashley who couldn’t really be bothered after all.

Comment #2Not the first or the last time this will happen.
I see theMag is asking all the players to put in a transfer request – cant see it happening, but would love to see it.
Even better on day 1 they all have a niggling injury (AKA as Marcelino) during the warm up – game abandoned ? or do we forfeit the game?

Comment #3Sorry Neil but IMO your comments on appointing a manager are sensationalist.
Nottingham Forest aren’t in takeover talks so why compare us with them?
Why would we appoint a new manager now on a long term contract if the takeover is still on?
Why would a new manager take the job now when they could be dumped in days/weeks by a new owner?
If, as I believe, BZG were given a two week deadline to put up or shut up a week ago and that deadline passes I think we’ll see a new manager appointed sharpish.
And, I have no doubt, behind the scenes there is already a shortlist.
Painting MA and Charnley as utter clueless buffoons might go down well with the masses but it is sensationalist at best and lacking in common sense at worst.

Now alots been made of this 61 plus sales transfer budget comprising of the 11 million from last season and then the 50 million thats left over after all outgoings have been accounted for. But the reality is there is no budget.
Rafa wanted to know his budget so he can speak to player’s and agent’s and get deals lined up. But the club say you have no budget, you come to us with a list of the players you want and a decision will be made on a case by case basis. So just because they have the money to apparently bid for plea, they dont have it for rondon. So if rafa wanted say 6-7 players he has no idea how many of those players hes actually going to get.
Every deal has to be financially conducive from three perspectives :- wages, transfer fee and agents/signing on fees. Rafa’s found ever since hes been there they agree to two and then say no to the other and he feels the club make excuses not to do the deals he wants. Club says they dont have the resources other clubs do so every deal has to be financially just right.
The club have put names to rafa, but hes not interested, he wants his own players. Wont be part of a transfer comitee. When club say we can get this player in for you he says no as he wants his own names.
Rafa wanted control over the budget and how its spent, to build the team and squad the way he saw fit. Rafa had the final say on incoming transfers but no say on outgoing transfers. Hes told hes got to sell before he can buy, but didn’t trust the club to replace the players that left.

I agree with Neil; Ashley and Charnley ARE utterly clueless.
They could be presiding over a top world class institution in Nufc instead of a club devoid of ambition with its loyal supporters praying for someone to takeover the club and likely to be relegated again next season!

Lee Charnley hopes to have a new manager appointed by the time the team leaves for the Premier League Asia Trophy, which begins on July 17. Thats if we have a team i have a feeling when they report back for traning their will be more then just a few transfer requests going in .

Comment #15Agree with billson and jib. Yes we should not have lost rafa, completely crazy, but assuming Ashley stays, he us the owner and its his rules, not rafa’s that count. And wishing he was murdered as a child is just plain offensive and people staying that kind of thing shoukd get a ban. Correct we are not comparable with nittm forest and their appointment of a manager 20 mins after a sacking due to player power looks daft. And we may be subject to a change of ownership. So fair points from billson and jib

When you’ve built a business one tenth the size of Ashley’s and have one tenth of his wealth you might have the very slightest grounds for calling him clueless and a buffoon.
Until you have, saying he is a clueless buffoon is, in your words, farcical at best and just negligent at worst.

How would you describe Ashley referring to his management of Nufc
Bought the club on a whim for the wrong reason
Early doors taking advice from the wrong people
Too eager to please by sacking Sam and appointing KK
When he decided to have a shot at running it properly
he used the wrong business model
When he mused about bringing other people in he should have either
brought in investors who knew footy
OR
did what SJH did and have a public share issue.

Comment #36Close jib but you lose out on the cigar.
Ashley told SJH he specifically wanted NUFC to market SD and get his brands pushed out to s wide audience. Even after 12 years many still don’t understand what that means, even after the way he has got rid of Shearer, KK and Benitez (who expressly didn’t want the club to be a treadwater advertising mule) some fans still don’t understand what he’s using the club for.
Clue: not to be a proper competitive football team or to represent the Region and it’s proud aspirations.
