Newcastle United youngster Yannick Toure has made the Daily Mail’s list of top Premier League players aged eighteen and under.
He joins the likes of Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi, a forward who Bayern Munich are trying to sign, and Liverpool’s new Dutch signing Sepp van den Berg, a defender just bought from PEC Zwolle, as some top youngsters in England.
Toure joined Newcastle last summer on a free transfer from Young Boys in Switzerland. He had some top clubs vying for his signature.
Yannick Toure– I hope he didn’t join to play under Rafa
The Swiss forward had this to say to NUFC TV when he signed:
“I’m very happy to sign for Newcastle.”
“I’ve heard a lot about them. I know it’s a famous club in England and I’m very, very happy to be here.”
“There was a lot of interest in me, but I chose to come here because it’s a great and traditional club in England.”
Toure had some difficulty adapting initially and with slight injuries but started to shine earlier this year.
Then U23’s coach and current Academy Head of Coaches Ben Dawson had this to say about Toure in February:
“Elias (Sorensen) came across a little bit younger at 16 and it took him a while to get used to things across here and to develop.
“Yannick has proven to be the same.
“The injury in pre-season didn’t help him, but it allowed him time to get a better understanding of what was expected.
“He was able to pick up the language a bit quicker and he is spending around 10 hours a week on his English on top of his training schedule.
“He is working hard off the pitch to try and make those adjustments that we are now seeing the benefits on the pitch.”
Along with Elias Sorensen, we have two very promising young strikers on the books at the moment. Let’s hope they both make the progress necessary to become Newcastle regulars sooner rather than later.
Incidentally, ex-Newcastle United youth player Lewis Gibson, who left to join Everton two summers ago, also made the list.
