The Sun’s Claim Of Bid Rejected For Mainz Forward Is Misleading

The Sun have just published an article that L’Equipe have reported of a Newcastle bid for Mainz forward Jean-Philippe Mateta. The issue is that the L’Equipe article they are sourcing is from June 9th and has already been widely reported.

In June, we did an article of Newcastle’s supposed bid of between €20-€25M for the excellent French striker. The Sun are now reporting on this old report from L’Equipe. The link they post in the article even brings up a June 9th article from Sports Witness about L’Equipe’s report.

While we think Jean-Philippe Mateta is definitely someone Newcastle should try to bring in as he is very talented, we are very skeptical that any bid has been lodged.

He was, in fact, reportedly keen on joining Newcastle last summer before joining Mainz for £9m where he had a decent first season in the Bundesliga.

This is what was said about Mateta last summer:

“Mateta is understood to be keen on making the move (to Newcastle), and Newcastle are keen, but as are a number of rivals – with the likes of West Ham, Leicester and Everton also expressing an interest.”

We find it hard to believe that Mike Ashley would sanction a high bid of the reported £35m it would take for Mainz to sell the striker after he was available for less than a third of that amount last summer.

Holy sh1t mate, don’t over react. If your passing on what you heard then fine, I take it back. Bloody hell, don’t be so delicate. We have enough of that with a couple of other posters on here.
If your not on the wind up, (and your source isn’t) then great.

I don’t use SD my mate is a toon fan as well and he does. He’s not a prick because he does, it’s his choice. Whilst everyone wants Ashley out and many see keeping away from his tat shops is the answer( I believe this as well) some don’t. Also as a fellow Sikh I wonder what you felt you needed to mention his religion and what thay had to do with his choices or your opinion of him. He spoke to you politely? Shook your hand. Said to say hi when you saw him. Seems like he was a decent fellow. Unless I missed something in your post and he was rude.

Ed we were never bringing Mateta in except for 10m or less so this is not on but it does have Charnley written all over it, French, young (early 20s I think) with sell on potential if we had bought him earlier (last year).

U can put a bid in for anybody but when ur newcastle u put it in at a 3rd of the players value then take a month to follow it up when its turned down then say u tried, more likely to try and get him on loan the way we always do

Ashley is laughing at us and we’re all letting him away with it, time to take a stand

We haven’t got a manager, are odds on to be relegated and the owners ambition has been publically laid bare. Take Perez, not the greatest but in today’s market with 13 PL goals last season is worth 30M. He spoke of talking to his new manager and the club showing ambition (and probably 80/100K a week, what have we got to offer, Lee Churnley showing plans for a training ground that’s never going to be built and 40K a week until he’s sold to a bigger club.

Yeah he does. But he must realise how far fetched something like that seems. Me jumping to the “wind up” conclusion has to be understandable, he even admits that himself, but he’s kind of gone over defensive over it

Intelligent people, with good self esteem, change their minds in light of fresh thinking and new information when applicable. That, IMO, is what debate is about; to refine opinions, it’s not about who’s right or wrong. I am not my avatar, I am not my words, I am not my opinion.

Whenever anybody says “with all due respect” you know the next words out of their mouth will have no respect.

It is like on Game of Thrones. You know that when somebody gets married they will die before the end of the episode.

What makes me laugh is how so many are willing to clutch at any straw. There’s no deal happening, think on it training’s underway, you have no manager, a squad that has made no additions, a squad that didn’t buy its best striker and sold its second best (well 3rd after Miggy but he doesn’t count as he’s really a winger)… I mean what a mess you’d need to have some pretty solid guarantees in place before you walked in at the price Ashley wants. For one you’d need to know someone like Mourinho was willing and ready to sign together with a team of assistant coaches he wanted. You’d need to have identified a striker really, willing and able to sign with proven goals in him and at least one strong DM to replace Diame and that’s just for starters!

Who’d buy at Ashley’s price this late? I’ll hope but I don’t see it.
