Reports – Steven Gerrard Is On Newcastle Shortlist But Initial Attempts Have Been Resisted

The Mirror has reported that Steven Gerrard will likely not be the next coach at Newcastle United this summer. The Mirror report comes just hours after the Chronicle reported that Steven Gerrard had made Ashley’s shortlist of potential targets.

This is what the Chronicle’s Lee Ryder reported late Sunday evening:

Newcastle have drawn up a shortlist of managers with Gerrard one of the names the club could approach formally with the pre-season trip to China just a week away.

However, the Mirror are subsequently reporting that Mike Ashley has been rebuffed by Rangers in his attempts to lure Steven Gerrard to Newcastle:

This is what the Mirror is reporting:

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has attempted to bring Steven Gerrard to St. James’ Park as Rafa Benitez’s replacement.

Ashley targeted Rangers boss Gerrard and Nice manager Patrick Vieira after Benitez’s contract ran out and the Spaniard left for China.

But the Sports Direct magnate has known from the offset that the chances of luring Liverpool legend Gerrard to Tyneside were slim.

This week he leads the club into Europa League action in Gibraltar against St. Joseph’s and the Rangers hierarchy haven’t welcomed Newcastle ’s interest especially after Ashley’s previous volatile relationship with the club.

So from the reports in the Mirror it appears that Rangers will not allow Steven Gerrard to leave for Newcastle. With Steven Gerrard still having three years remaining on his contract at the Ibrox, this move would have a lot of roadblocks.

Steven Gerrard– unlikely to be a realistic target

The Steven Gerrard link is very dubious on two accounts. First of all due to his relationship to Rafa Benitez and secondly due to Mike Ashley’s relationship to Rangers.

Gerrard will know all about the recent fiasco with Rafa Benitez and his contract talks. There is a lot of doubt that Steven Gerrard would be willing to work under Mike Ashley and his failed “model”.

Especially considering if he had any inclination to speak to Newcastle, he would most likely call Rafa Benitez for advice. That call would almost certainly end any inclination.

The other reason that this link is dubious was alluded to in the Mirror article – “Ashley’s previous volatile relationship with the club”.

Mike Ashley bought a stake in Rangers in 2014 and tried to increase his shareholdings which was ultimately rejected by the Scottish FA.

He also tried to secure a £10m loan using the Ibrox stadium as security. This was heavily protested by Rangers supporters at the time.

He continues to battle the club over the rights to merchandise sales of replica kits to this day.

So we would find the likelihood of Steven Gerrard becoming the next manager of Newcastle United as highly unlikely.

    Jib,

I could be wrong, but my understanding was that :-

G-MOAL is the SD corporate chopper and
    G-MAOL is Ashley’s private chopper

In which case G-MAOL is parked up in high wycombe where Ashley lives

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has approached Rangers manager and former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard about becoming the Magpies’ next boss. (Mirror)

The Mirror must have given the pens to the trainees over the weekend, what utter tripe.

Ashley personally dirtying his hands with appointing the next manager, don’t think so.
Ashley talking with Rangers, you’re having a laugh. He’s not on their friends with benefits list is he. If he got involved it would be like a scene from Taggart.

Leave Charnley to get on with the job he’s meant to be doing, unless he’s just going through the motions as someone else has taken care of this appointment already.

Is that the statement we have been waiting for from BZG? if so i am more confused than ever.

Second comment – “if a deal is not forthcoming”

If a deal is not forthcoming is the ominous bit. If both parties have worked non stop and the current owners have cooperated amicably, then with two willing parties the deal should conclude.

Sounds like the usual portion of pie crust with a save facing mission for both sides.

If this statement is correct then hold onto your seats.

However, the Bin Zayed Group, via Dubai-based journalist Peter Redding of the Capital Radio UAE, has now put out a statement for Newcastle fans.

“Both parties have worked diligently in finalising a deal, none more so than ourselves. We have completed every aspect required in a takeover process.

“Press claims of no bids or Premier League approval processes are simply untrue.

“The current owners have cooperated amicably throughout this process and if a deal is not forthcoming it will not be due to lack of effort from both parties.”
