The Chronicle are reporting that ex-Feyenoord manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst is not in the running for the manager’s position at Newcastle.
It was reported soon after the announcement that Rafa Benitez would not return that von Bronckhorst’s name appeared as someone expressing interest in the position.
This was due to comments his agent Guido Albers when asked about the new vacancy at Newcastle. This is what Albers said then:
“I think the rumours have come a little bit early and no-one from the club has spoken to Gio. But I think every coach in the world would be interested in working in the Premier League.
“And what we would say if a club like Newcastle has an opportunity to work for them then of course he would be interested in doing that. It is an amazing club with an amazing fanbase but it’s up to them who they decide to go for.”
The Chronicle are now reporting that van Bronchhorst’s representatives have indeed contacted Newcastle but have been turned away. This is what Mark Douglas reports:
But after representatives for the ex-Netherlands international contacted the club they were told the Magpies were ideally looking for someone with experience of coaching in the Premier League.
The message communicated to van Bronckhorst appears to suggest United are looking for someone who will hit the ground running and has a working up-to-date knowledge of the English top flight rather than someone from overseas who will be learning about the Premier League on the job.
This is a good indication of the mindset of Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley as they search for a new manager. One which, incidentally, should have began almost six weeks ago when Rafa Benitez informed them in May of his decision to not extend his contract as tendered.
Giovanni von Bronckhorst– no longer in contention for Newcastle job
If Newcastle are in fact looking for someone with Premier League coaching experience that would eliminate candidates like Steven Gerard, Patrick Vieira, and Chris Wilder.
It would also bring question marks about Mikel Arteta who has never held the top position but does have assistant manager experience. He would therefor theoretically have a “up-to-date knowledge of the English top flight”.
Then there is the likes of Spaniard Quique Sanchez Flores who has just one year of experience at Watford. Would that be considered enough experience? Surely he would have enough overall experience to still be in contention. Though it depends on how long ago “up-to-date” is as his one year of experience was in 2015-16.
If reports are correct that the club is looking to hire a manager before the team leave for China the middle of next week, then they have to identify their top candidate and quickly.
With all of the noise around Steve Bruce today, they may have done just that. While we believe Bruce would jump at the chance, Sheffield Wednesday will want to keep the manager who only joined the club in February.
Bruce does have a history, albeit early in his managerial career, of jumping to better jobs after only months in charge.
He left Wigan in 2001 after just two months at the helm to join Crystal Palace, from whom he bolted for Birmingham City just three months later.

Comment #4Asked about speculation linking him with the job by Radio Sheffield last weekend, Bruce said: “Maybe because I’m from Newcastle. I never take any notice of all that sort of speculation or tittle-tattle, because the way the newspapers are today, no disrespect, I think there have been 150 managers associated with Newcastle. I would suppose I’m going to be one of them.”

Comment #5If Bruce (or similar) gets the job I would suggest a minutes silence and the laying of a wreath to mark the passing of our club. I had forgotten how shambolic everything was pre Rafa

Comment #6von Bronckhorst, far too clever to get involved with anything like this. He can smell it all the way over the Channel. Ashley’s rotting carcass is going to be hard to ignore.

Change starts from within, you said its 50 years and hard habit to break. Instead of looking at others you need to do it first, that’s if you want to.
It’ll never work if fans dont want to try it, each to there own though and you’ve spent the money so are entitled to do as you see fit

Comment #13If Ashley and Charnley have any fear of a backlash
Chris Hughton – who was hugely popular – would seem
to be the obvious choice to placate the fanbase.

Comment #14Expect a different name every day at least until the team are ensconsed in China.
All the rumours and links are just filling space to pass time until next week.
Charnley isn’t that stupid nor is Bruce.
Bruce has no meaningful or relevant Premier League experience so doesn’t fit the so called criteria. Watch his betting odds drift off in the next 48hours.
Some names will be regurgitated so expect Artita and Flores to get some more mentions in the meantime.
After that expect Alex Ferguson and others to be given air time.
It’s an illusion that Charnley is up to this after a weekend break in Europe.
For all we now he was in a nice cafe in Amsterdam
After all the clubs going to pot, so why not join in.

Comment #16The “no comment ” comment from Newcastle United on all things Newcastle on the orders of Mike Ashley is a complete dereliction of duty of care towards the thousands of paying customers that line his pockets .
We have a spiritual connection to Newcastle United , he does not , he plays us on that.
It’s abandonment and neglect .
To think he stuck two fingers up at the fans at the last supper in Ponteland tells you all you need to know about him .

Comment #30No way would Ashley risk hiring a young manager- they’re a risk as they’re more likely to have ambition! He doesn’t want to accidentally hire a manager with ambition!

Comment #31I watched a fans meeting from the Stadium of blight on TV ..Nial Quimm and Steve Bruce , a fan asked him if they had been offered Shefki Cookie ..Bruce sniggered and said ” yes but we politely declined ” snigger snigger , laughs all round , Bruce was the loudest . We had just signed Shefki .
Bruce is anywhere for a little Apple …I recall him chopping our strikers down cynically and brutally and not being sent off in the 0-1 in 1996 when Cantona scored .
His family support the toon but he’s only interested in money ..a Judas from what I witnessed coming out of that TV doc from the stadium of blight .
Imagine his Son playing centre back for us !
No bloody thanks Ashley.

Comment #38I actually hope Hughton wouldn’t take the job. I liked him and I respect him. Coming in here with the unclean ones would ruin him. If no manager will take the job then what? Does the FA step in at any point? Probably not. Redfearn would be the man I suppose and there’s no law against that.
