According to a report in Corriere dello Sport detailed by Sport Witness, Newcastle are now looking at Juventus shot stopper Mattia Perin as competition for Martin Dubravka. It was just earlier this year that Martin Dubravka was said to be a target of the Turin club.
Mattia Perin joined Juventus last July for €12.3M from the club he had been with since he was just 16, Genoa CFC.
Perin was brought in to replace Italian goalkeeping legend Gianluigi Buffon who had just departed on a free to join PSG. Well, last week Buffon returned to Juve after just one year in Paris.
There has been many links for Perin this summer due to his limited playing time in Turin last season. Perin was expected to battle ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny for the number one spot. However, Szczesny was looking to claim the number one spot for himself after spending the previous season as Buffon’s understudy.
The former Arsenal goalkeeper did just that and had the best season of his career for the Serie A champions. His form left minimal opportunities for Perin, who managed only 9 starts before his season ended in April with a shoulder injury.
Mattia Perin– Yes, Newcastle are interested
The report from Italy is claiming that Newcastle are looking at Perin due to the reported high fee for Lazio keeper Thomas Strakosha. The Albanian international is valued between €40-50m by his club. A fee which Newcastle certainly would not pay.
Perin would be much more economical as he was bought by Juventus for just €12m last summer. The fee for Perin would not be the issue for Newcastle.
The issue is going to be the quality of the clubs that are also interested in the twice capped Italian. In May, Roma were said to be preparing a bid but that interest has appeared to die out.
This week, though, it is Porto who are very heavily linked with interest in the keeper as well as the aforementioned Lazio, but only as a replacement if Strakosha were to leave.
The report in Corriere dello Sport list Sevilla, Benfica, and Fiorentina with ties to the player.
With the current situation on Tyneside, you would have to question Newcastle’s ability to attract any players at the moment. Especially one that could have as many options as Perin.
It is a shame though, for the price Perin would be the perfect player to push Martin Dubravka at Newcastle.

Couldn’t find the money after providing proof of funds? No way.
Maybe they wouldn’t find the money to pay for the bolt-ons demanded by Ashley!

Does the club have a ‘finance side’ to speak of? I’d imagine there’s not much more than admin staff who count, record and bank the cash as well as running the petty cash box.
And, if you were Bishop, you’d know the best way to set a rumour running is to tell someone on the inside, in confidence.

Comment #89Not believing the takeover is dead like, just too many things point to it being alive. Dubs theory makes more sense, Ashley having one last laugh leaking Steve Bruce info before a takeover announcement.

Suggest we start with the UK – Portugal border and get Oz and the gang to start building one around SJP to protect the Cathedral from further damage.

Comment #94Daft as it might seem but I wouldn’t put it past Ashley to have his aircraft fly here and there to fuel rumours about VIPs and potential buyers.
Why? So he could continue to have a laugh at the plane-watching fans’ expense.

Comment #95Takeover in December it is then, wonder who it will be this time… we haven’t had a russian buyer yet
Guess we got lucky with Rafa and he gave us hope we could crack on and become a top ten / eight team, Ashleys reverted to type and will continue with the just survive on a tight budget mentality for the foreseeable, Charnleys told him we have a purple player in each position and can fill the other squad slots with kids.
Other fans / pundits will call us deluded as we’ve been nothing more than a lower mid table relegation fodder team ever since the SBR years.
Ashley will eventually sell but we may be in the lower reaches of the championship for a couple of years ir even in League 1 by then 🙁

Most of us didnt believe in the first place. Extra ordinary claims require extraordinary evidence… fog names the source and it isnt an extraordinary claim to realists is 100% believable. Still could be wrong tho but doubtful.

Comment #100welshy14, well said. It’s an interesting snippet from fog on the tyne, to be treated just like all the others and nothing more.
Though I do appreciate the source being named. Neil Richardson is a Financial Controller, so works under Claire Alexander who in turn will report into Charnley.
A responsible position, but not exactly the most senior member of the NUFC team, I guess, so not likely to be privy to detailed info, bearing in mind the negotiations have been handled by lawyers darn sarf.
And it’s come via his wife. Chinese whispers comes to mind….

The way I understood the BZG-Liverpool connection was that BZG had made an enquiry and Fenway, not wanting to sell, told them it’d cost them £2B. In other words, ‘Be off’

Better being a footstool in Wetherspoons that that.
One things for sure Steve Bruce will have a 24hour watch on him when he lands back in the UK on Thursday ?
Poor man, he’ll be locked in his hoose, the dog won’t get a walk and will piss on the carpets and Sheffield Wednesday fans will be wailing at his gates.

Ashley won’t have taken a penny out of the club. The moneys been coming in and used to run it on the bones of its backside while not bringing in reveue via advertising.
You could say that SD has benefitted from free advertising and merchandising while the club’s had nothing from it.
That’s where the money’s gone.

You know as well as I do that football’s got nothing to do with the Labour Party TV programme. It’s about Corbyn and his cronies’ fudging on the accusations of their failure to deal with anti-semitism in the Labour Party.
Oh and for clarity, I think their handling of it has been nothing short of disgraceful.
