Pete Graves of Sky Sports is reporting some good news today for Newcastle fans – the audacity of it!
But seriously, he says that some key signings have already been lined up by Newcastle (presumably Steve Nickson) and once we have a manager in – those players will be signed.
These will be some of the players our Head of Recruitment Steve Nickson has been scouting during the season.
Nickson would have agreed to go after some of these players before Rafa left the club at the end of June, through frustration at the complete lack of ambition of owner Mike Ashley.
Steve Bruce – Newcastle still need to agree with Owls on compensation
Here’s what Pete Graves has tweeted:
I’m TOLD some key signings will follow new head coach announcement. Fully expect the “we don’t care” replies. But that’s what I’m led to believe. Clearly time is of the essence and pre season is upon us. Nothing about this summer so far has been ideal preparation for #nufc. https://t.co/ugTzlqAQyz

In a report Neil put out earlier today Keith Downie of Sky Sports also reported that Newcastle had a few signings already lined up and they were waiting for the new manager coming in.
In 2015 the hierarchy signed players before Steve McClaren was appointed, and he had no say in the matter.
Whether Nickson is waiting specifically for the new manager coming in – we will have to wait to see – but there are now only 26 days left in the summer transfer window.
We also need to get players to leave the club or sent out on loan, who are surplus to requirements.
But it’s good to hear that Steve Nickson, who was very highly regarded by Rafa, has been working away in the background on some transfers; we also have to remember Steve was the one who went to Atlanta in January to help get the deal for Miguel Almiron finally over the line.
The Newcastle squad has been announced for the Premier League Asia Trophy, and they leave tomorrow for China.
It looks like Neil Redfearn and Ben Dawson may have to lead the squad in China.
If we do have some good signings lined up that would be good news, but we need a talented manager (head coach?) in – and we don’t know if Newcastle are willing to pay the £5M release clause for Steve Bruce.
That’s the status at the moment, and it could even fall through if Sheffield Wednesday don’t lower the compensation they want for Bruce.
To pay £5M for a Championship manager to replace the world-class and highly popular Rafa Benitez seems completely daft.
But this is Newcastle United and Ashley is still the owner – so yes – it is daft.
And normal for Mike Ashley.
