The Problem With John Carver And Shola Ameobi’s Sky Sports Comments

Sky Sports’ Pete Graves has launched a defense of John Carver and Shola Ameobi after their comments yesterday on the pending appointment of Steve Bruce.

This is what John Carver said to Sky Sports that led to a backlash from the fanbase:

“If he does get appointed then he has got my support”

“He has got a lot of people’s support in the North East.”

“He is a Geordie guy.”

“He is from just down the road in Corbridge.”

“Loves the football club…but not just that, he has got a good record in the Premier League.”

“I think he is just short of 1,000 games as a coach and as a manager.”

“So he is a stable appointment and let’s get behind him.”

Shola Ameobi then followed Carver’s comments with the following:

“If it is Steve, he has been a manager for a long time obviously he has got a good pedigree.”

“You know being a geordie y’know is just the cherry on top.”

“Ultimately whoever is hopefully coming in will do the best job, Rafa left on the back of two good results in the league and hopefully the new manager can take us forward.”

While Ameobi is employed by the club, we can understand that he is not going to be negative. However, a “no comment” would have been the best course for him.

How in the world, can Steve Bruce take the club forward from where Rafa Benitez had toiled under Mike Ashley to get us?

This was just a ridiculous statement and sometimes “no comment” is actually a preferable response.

As for John Carver, well the self-described “best manager in the world” (currently unemployed) says two absolutely ludicrous things.

First of all, he does not have a lot of support of people in the North East. Secondly, his pedigree is certainly not good.

Unless, of course, your definition of “a lot of people” and “good” is similar to your definition of “best manager” – which would both be the polar opposite of reality.

Pete Graves came out this morning to defend the pair after their interview caused a stir among the fans.

The issue is not really the comments supporting Steve Bruce or the backlash they have faced for them. The problem is that the media don’t give an accurate representation of what is going on with the club.

Sky Sports is quick to trot out Dennis Wise to act like Mike Ashley is some normal guy who is being maligned by the Newcastle fanbase.

So when an ex-player and ex-coach who are both from the area are on the television acting like everything is normal, fans are going to react accordingly.

Everything is not normal.

The owner of the club just got rid of a world class manager and is now trying to replace him with someone with one of the worst records in the Premier League.

This is what Sky Sports should be reporting. Not running with positive statements about a club that is in complete shambles and getting worse by the minute.

To be honest the club have brought this on themselves, it’s one thing for Graves and co to bang on about the fans being harsh but the club has given absolutely no information on anything.

Rafa out – standard bland press release
    Takeover – Nothing at all
New manager – Nothing at all
Strikers out – Nothing at all
New signings – Nothing at all
Plan for the season – Nothing at all
Season ticket price rises – Nothing
    Extortionate replica top – Nothing
    Fan unrest – Nothing

It’s like they don’t give a flying ….. Whilst there are many clubs in a worse situation ( i.e. Sunderland), the club actually tries to communicate with the fans even if it’s not what they want to hear… we have to rely on ITKs and second guessing by journos – it’s pathetic

Have seen a few folk online saying that Perez had that release clause for Champions League clubs ONLY!?!

But the club thought that it was too good a deal to refuse…….

We’re scraping the barrel appointing Agent Bruce..we don’t have to accept it.

If Agent Bruce is appointed, he should be barracked from day 1…he’s as guilty as Big Mike for raping the club!

Do you not see what the fat man is doing.

He has stripped the club bare over the past 12 years, in order to steal the money from the premier league… which, by the way, belongs to the club.

This is his insurance against plummeting down the divisions.

    It’s Soccernomics!!

What a mess with Steve Bruce, I dont want him as manager but dont think he is a bad person but now he has ruined himself as Shef Wed manager before even becoming our manager.

I dont think i have ever been less excited for the start of a season

Brucie is being heavily incentivised just to keep us in the league rather than say, reach a minimum of tenth, to you think that’s acceptable for the 8th richest club in the PL?

I may hate ashley (i’m still waiting for your evidence to the contrary but i’ll keep waiting) but do you expect supporters to be sad if we win?? Ho ho what a great nufc fan you are. Fcuk off an support sunderland, you will find plenty of friendly anti nufc opinions on their boards.

I think what he’s trying to say is that you’ll be happier with being able to point out that Brucie beat Arsenal at home where as last year Rafa couldn’t than the win itself.

Jail let us know if looking at funds etc. I would support you in this, but i agree with Billson that we wont get anythung writing to the football authorities. There needs to be a more dramatic event to happen than chhosing a cheap, lower level manager, for them to take notice. Toon 22 and his friend Tsunki can shout all they like, but much as i wud love to see ashley taken to task by the FA etc, he wont be. I hope Charnley gets more local heat though. He has been getting away with murder.

Can’t blame Steve Bruce, by all accounts a nice bloke who is on par with every other manager employed by Ashley / Charnley
He’s no worse than McLaren, Pardew, Carver etc – following Rafa and the takeover means he’s on a hiding to nothing before he even starts.
So now we have 3 strikers out the door and none in , looks like Ashley’s selling what he can in readiness for the certainty of relegation
