Neil reported earlier today that it looks like Newcastle have paid Sheffield Wednesday £4m for the services of Steve Bruce., with news that he has now resigned from the Owls.
So becasue of poor foresight and management from the Newcastle owner we have to pay a Championship club £4M for their Championship class manager to replace world-class manager Rafa Benitez.
Mike Ashley refused for three years to give Rafa enough transfer money to build a good team on Tyneside and refused to meet his demands to stay.
So this is where we have ended up.
But just like back in 20015 when we didn’t have a manager expect Ashley to spend the money in the transfer window – maybe to spite Rafa?
Ashley is not logical in what he does, and he’s a very dangerous owner of a football club.
We just hope that whoever comes in, Bruce can get the best out of them as Rafa did.
The only way to salvation for this club is to somehow get this unscrupulous owner out of the club.
He’s a cancer on Newcastle.
You can quote me on that!
Steve Bruce – almost certain to become Newcastle manager now
OK – so I’ve said all that before and if Steve Bruce comes in we will support him and the players.
Why?
Because he’s the manager and we will support any Newcastle manager and our players – it’s as simple as that.
It’s Ashley we want out, and new owners will be able to resurrect the club with a much better and more expensive manager in place – plus more talented players than we have.
That’s what Rafa was trying to do but the one man who was stopping him was the owner.
Bruce has a second class Premier League record, but it will not do any good at all to immediately get at him like fans did against Alan Pardew.
We now realize after the Benitez tenure – that Pardew didn’t have much say at all in anything at Newcastle.
He did the best he could with the players he was given.
It will be much the same with Steve Bruce, but he a good man-manager and puts up with no nonsense from players.
And like Pardew before him, it will be the biggest and most famous club he will ever manage.
That was not true for Rafa, and he brilliantly got the fans and the City behind the football club.
Bruce is a Geordie and turned down his first chance to manage the club when Freddy Shepherd wanted him to replace Sir Bobby Robson back in August 2004.
But Bruce had just signed a five-year contract with Birmingham City, and his release clause (compensation to Brum) was £5m.
That’s interesting in itself.
Anyway, this summer saga – one of the worst at Newcastle for decades – will hopefully soon be over (a little bit) with at least a manager in place.
Whoever the manager is he needs to sign some players and also persuade the likes of Martin Dubravka, Fabian Schar and even Isaac Hayden to stay at the club.
If Bruce can do that he will have made a good start to his Newcastle career.
And we will hope and pray that somebody can come in and quickly buy the club from the owner.
He deserves to be kicked out of the club.
He’s earned it.
We need Newcastle United FC resurrected – that’s all I am hoping for now – plus that we can survive relegation this season.
Those goals are a lot different than they were on May 12th.
Comments welcome.

Comment #7Have to disagree Ed, it’s not good enough to support someone because they happen to be the manager .. he’s not good enough end of and showing support to him only reinforces the decision by the people that hire him

Comment #10No intention if backing him – Sorry. You might accept a ‘second rate manager’ (and he isn’t that good) and the complete mismanagement of the club but I do not. I want better for my club – each to their own though – I will brace myself for the potential disappointment but at least I can try and make change whereas others can continue to accept, support and pay Ashley and his vision for our club.

Comment #12Shocking decision to appoint Bruce he is pretty awful and should never have the chance to manage a prem club on his current achievements. I cant understand why people wont support him though as he is clearly not at fault in this mess and has taken a chance to manage a club he supports and is a much bigger and better club than Sheff Wed (even with fat man in charge). I think he will be given significant money to spend also as would have Rafa but there was clearly other things that didnt fit for Rafa to take us forward (such as invesment in youth, training ground etc).

Comment #152 reposts to catch up with Neil!
Joelinton would be a good signing if we had someone like Rondon to mentor him in the role… as it is he will be thrown into the Prem and expected to establish himself as a prolific No. 9 and goal scorer on his own. Almiron’s a young and promising winger, Muto remains an unknown to me and Sorensen is another promising promotion from our academy… Zero experience up top is worrying where will the goals come from Scharr, Clark and Lascelles?
Don’t think Ashley will even splash on Joelinton. To be totally honest he announced his retirement but if Charmless had any sense at all he’d approach ol’ Crouchy with a one season incentives heavy contract to gives us a target man up front since Bruce is going to park the bus (his style is all based on his ol’ glory days as a player under Fergy) and volley the ball into the opponent’s box at distance (so Miggy, Shelvey and Atsu can expect a lot of work) and hope for a knock down or header so I’m expecting a 4-4-1-1- set up most games from S B with Miggy in behind the ? that will play as the lone striker up top. Rondon would really have done well in that role.

Comment #20Can’t wait till we get the “Newcastle are going to have to box clever for the rest of this window to get players in” from The Chronicle when Bruce gets announced!!
If Newcastle were really smart they would try get say an Andy Carroll or a Hernandez (who was actually decent under Bruce) on a free transfer both have experience and have injury issues that mean they won’t play all the games but still good as a 3rd choice! They would then sign Linton to be able to learn off one of the older strikers with Gayle being 2nd choice……..

Miggy is absolutely S B material because he can deliver at speed into the box. As it stands now biggest problems for Bruce in this order are Ashley management tying his hands on everything – he’s a coach not manager, preventing best players from shopping themselves Sissoko style in the window to the detriment of team play / gameplan, somehow not letting the fan reaction get to him or the players on gameday. A tall order

Comment #23So Steve (the makem) Bruce – SmB has now paved the way for his big money move to the top flight of the football league, probably the best league in the world, by dropping SheffWed right in the s41t, what a classy gentleman. The usual mayhem prevals at NUFC with £4M more wasted on a complete whim with zero chance of success. I for one will not support him. For those amongst us that thought Rafa was a defensive minded manager – you ain’t seen nothing yet, not that we actually have any goal scorers so should suit his style down to the ground. #ASHLEYOUT

Comment #28All of this is absolutely unfathomable. None of it makes any sense.
– Charnley “scours” Europe, then pays £4.2m for his SIXTH choice manager.
– Club remain entirely silent about everything.
– Selling players all over the place, replacing nobody.
– Reports that the club are awaiting a “head coach” before new signings can arrive….yet the head coach doesn’t really have a say?
– Reverting to the EXACT SAME MODEL that had the club relegated previously.
– Allegedly agreeing for Joelinton, who by all accounts is a bang-average player with below-par hair.
– No comment on takeover, from anywhere, with every “ITK” disappearing (again)
– SD and HoF struggling massively, yet Ashley is digging heels in over NUFC
– Only 3 weeks til the season begins, barely time to sign/bed in anybody at all
Fulham 0 – 4 Newcastle. If somebody said to you then “enjoy it while it lasts, you’re losing Perez, Rondon and Rafa, and will have Steve Bruce in charge” you’d have laughed, quite loudly. Yet here we are, and it beggars all belief, it makes zero sense in any way, shape or form. This club is going to be relegated. The “new manager bounce” will never exist, because the clowns in charge won’t sack Bruce, so it’s impossible to see what they’re trying to get out of this?
I get social media and journalists should be filtered, but NUFC seem to deliberately either blackout any outside input, or deliberately go against the grain, fly against the face of logic and reason. The truly bizarrre thing is they’ve done this before, and suffered hugely for it, yet are repeating the EXACT same pattern. It’s madness, like they’re all playing a game or something and don’t get anything about the world they live in.
I have tried and tried and tried to make some kind of sense of it and the only thing I keep coming back to is that this is a deliberate attempt to take the club into oblivion. Ashley only seems to operate in ££££’s, nothing else makes any sense, so I think he sees:
– Purchase of club – £134m
– Loans – £80m (perhaps less once the books are cooked appropriately)
– Sponsorship and assoiated benefits +£90m (perhaps more, this is in HIS head)
I think he sees a chance here to absolutely cripple the club this season to send us into the Championship. He will then refuse to sanction further purchases and perhaps look to clear his personal debt or write it down based on the value of commercial opportunity he has stolen. Once everything is cleared and settled he’ll be looking for a quick £80m or so sale of the club as a mid-table Championship, a big final EFF YOU to NUFC. It’s the only scenario that makes any sense, even if it makes none to me or you.

Comment #29If Ed wants us to support a Judas and thereby Ashley, who, without a doubt have been stealing a lot of money from our club, then my agenda on this blog, from this day forward, will be to shout everybody an earfull about the facts.

Where has the money, that the club has generated, gone?

Comment #30I just can’t understand why Charnley is so hell-bent on signing Steve Bruce. Poor manager, requires compensation, and fans are against him. Surely there are cheaper yes-men available that can do an equally poor job that wouldn’t draw as much ire from the fans. Makes no sense to me

Comment #32Just had this response to my letter to The Premier League
Quote
“Thanks for your email
I’m sorry read you are unhappy with the way your club is currently being run.
Newcastle United, like all clubs in the Premier League, is an independent body that is subject to and bound by the competition rules. As the organising body, our role is to apply the Premier League Handbook but we do cannot act outside of those rules and do not make decisions about the day to day running of our clubs.
In terms of ownership, we provide a framework that includes rules governing who can invest in our clubs and a requirement for clubs to demonstrate they are sustainable by submitting financial information showing they can meet their liabilities for the coming period. We cannot share details provided by our clubs, but please be assured that we monitor our rules on an ongoing basis. It is important to reiterate that each of our member clubs retains the autonomy to make their own business decisions.
If you haven’t already, then we would always recommend contacting your club directly to ensure they are aware of your views, or to request further information:
