Newcastle United lined up in a sort of 4-2-3-1 formation with Yoshinori Muto playing as a lone striker flanked by Matt Ritchie and Jacob Murphy. Though it was quite a fluid formation at times.
They played in their new home strips but with a different sponsor that alarmingly looks like it might just be Sports Direct in Cantonese. We were not able to verify that, however.
The side started decently before a goal by Diego Jota from just inside the box in the 15th minute. It was poor defending by Jamie Sterry that led to the goal.
Both squads took a pre-scheduled water break at the 26h minute due to the extreme conditions.
Newcastle were again punished by some horrific defending, this time by the entire back four, in a goal by Morgan Gibbs-White in the 32nd minute.
Then more calamitous defending as Isaac Hayden was dispossessed in the box by Jota who’s shot beat Karl Darlow in the 40th minute.
Newcastle were devoid of any cutting edge in attack and look miles behind Wolves at this stage of preseason.
The defending has been absolutely dreadful in a makeshift back four. This sort of display will not fill any fan with anything but dread for what lies ahead.
