Sport1 in Germany are reporting that the Joelinton deal to Newcastle could be announced today.
They also report two new details that should be of interest to Newcastle fans.
Sport1 is the outlet that originally broke the news that Newcastle were tracking Joelinton in February. They also still report that the length of the contract is still in question.
However, this latest report has stated that Joelinton has already said his goodbyes to his Hoffenheim teammates. So if that is true, it is looking like the contract length may not be something that will kill this deal.
While we do think that signing Joelinton for more than three years is essential, Newcastle have been burned by long contracts in the past. Henri Saivet and Jack Colback come quickly to mind.
Both of whom still have time remaining on their original deals despite playing no part in the squad over the past two seasons. Though they cost considerably less than Joelinton will.
Joelinton– said his goodbyes to Hoffenheim
Though Joelinton already comes with a record-breaking price tag, a contract of only three years could prove detrimental if the player excels on Tyneside. Mike Ashley will no doubt be looking to cash in on the Brazilian if he becomes world-class.
We would hope, if that is the case, he would last at least two seasons with Newcastle. If he has just a three-year deal, that would limit his transfer value as after two years he likely would not command as high of a fee with just one year remaining on his contract.
The report in Sport1 also now states that the deal could be as high as £47m. This is much higher than has been originally reported. We don’t know how true this is but Sport1 certainly seem to have some good sources on this transfer.
