Late last week, Football Insider reported that Karl Darlow was on Marcelo Bielsa’s shortlist to replace Kiko Casilla if the Spanish goalkeeper left the club.
There are two reported issues with Casilla for Leeds. The first is the player joined from Real Madrid on high wages in the hopes that Leeds would be promoted.
With Leeds falling to Derby in the Championship playoffs, the club have been left with a goalkeeper on high wages who also may not want to stay in the English second division.
The reports from last week were that Kiko Casilla was set to leave Leeds and Karl Darlow was on a list of potential replacements.
Today Football Insider’s Wayne Veysey has reported that Leeds have made an approach to sign Karl Darlow.
This is what he reports:
Leeds United have made an approach to sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow before the window shuts next month, Football Insider can reveal.
The Yorkshire giants are laying the groundwork for a late keeper signing amid doubts over the futures of current senior pair Kiko Casilla and Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
A Leeds source has told Football Insider that the club have registered their interest in Darlow and the viability of a loan or a permanent deal.
To us this just means that Leeds are just doing their work in case a transfer is necessary. The key issue here is that Leeds are looking to see if they can get Darlow before the window closes if they have to.
So basically making sure they are not left short when the window closes and Casilla makes a deadline day move.
Karl Darlow– approach has been made by Leeds to verify availability
Today Victor Orta, the Leeds Director of Football, had this to say at a Leeds event during their pre-season tour in Australia.
“I can say Kiko Casilla prefers to stay in Leeds United than the first division in Spain. And, again, for me, I feel really proud.”
So it looks like the Leeds connection to Karl Darlow is just as a failsafe in case they lose their number one goalkeeper this summer. It also seems, at the moment, that Casilla is willing to stay at Leeds and help in their promotion push.
Incidentally, Karl Darlow was also involved in a late night fracas when out with Jonjo Shelvey and Jack Colback last Friday night.
Here is a tweet from the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope on the incident. We are not sure of the severity of the incident but it has made all the papers today.
Exclusive: NUFC keeper Karl Darlow allegedly kicks man outside takeaway after row involving team-mate Jonjo Shelvey hours before team fly to China. Shelvey was called a ‘bald c***’ before saying ‘go back to your council house, you peasant’. Footage & story https://t.co/fDRbCQVoJj

Comment #2We have recently started to pay for players in instalments so not new anymore. Ny mag can and probably will confirm this.
From the last accounts we owe clubs about 20m but are also owed about 40m. So it’s something that we have started to implement.
When we were first linked with joelinton I wrote about him how I rated him a lot BUT if he’s going to be our main man under Bruce, then it is difficult to succeed with greater expectation with price tags and a season of expected struggle.
Some may remember that I used to post a lot about players in other leagues as I watch a lot of European football but for a couple seasons now I have stopped commenting about this due to our club under Ashley and pretty much losing hope and ambition.
I’m happy to go in more detail about joelinton and what I think but all I’ll say right now is fans will take to him like they took to almiron because he works hard for the team.
And please don’t judge his record for goals at 22 yo. Although, in all competitions he scored 11 last year with 9 assists, didnt always play upfront as he was sometimes on the wing or am to accommodate belfodil and kramaric.
I’m conflicted though as everyone knows my opinion on Ashley and boycotts etc but 36m on one player, if it actually happens seeing as we have been here before, is big statement. Saying that, no point buying a Ferrari and only driving it to the end of the street and back.

Potentially if the transfer rumours are correct we should be signing Linton , Scott and Saint-Maximin that’s actually good on paper whether they can all adapt is another thing!
Would give us the pace we desperately need with Scott being really creative just behind so you could have something like a 433 with the wide forwards cutting in on their strong foot:
Linton CF
Saint-Maxim LW
Almiron RW
Scott AMF
Longstaff AMF
Hayden DM
We would still need a quality left back mind you !

Would that be the same Scott who struggled to get starts in the Dutch second tier last season? He’s nowhere near good enough to cut it in the prem, looks like he’d struggle in the championship to be honest.

Comment #9As for joelinton, might be a decent player but this changes nothing for me .
The fact we can shell out for him yet not a player who has proved he can bully anyone in the prem ?
deja vue ..for maclaren insert bruce…for joelinton insert mitrovich .big fee , chased him for months and a 22 year old expected to hit the ground running and get the goals to keep us up …what can possibly go wrong?

Comment #14It seems on BBC ceefax (and other reports) it is sugested that Newcastle fans want to stage a boycott due to the signing of Steve Bruce as Manager.
Whilst there’s maybe a very small element of truth in this, in the main, it’s simply not true!
There’s been talk of a Boycott for weeks now but Rafa leaving NUFC, and the total lack of direction from the owner was I believe the catalyst, in starting the thought of a “Boycott”

I haven’t seen him play live so i’m just going off youtube etc. I was looking at his goals record last season and a few things stand out. 7 goals for starters, one of which was a penalty. Joselu had a better record at three different German teams of similar standing. In his first 11 games last season he scored 4 and created 4, this is when he was hyped and Benitez scouted him. In the remaining 20 games or so he got 3 goals and I assist. In the last ten he scored two while his team scored 22, so they are high scoring team. He played 6 times on the wing or number 10, in these games he scored 2 so he did better in other positions. He seems to have some good qualities, dribbling and strength with a little pace, but I’m not sure about his first touch in the premier when he’ll be closed down more. He is young but £35m is a lot for 7 goals in a very weak Bundesliga. Perez got 12 from number ten. Mitrovic got 10+ in a tougher league with the bottom team.

Yes, you’re correct.
We do pay for players in installments, you’re also correct in stating that we are owed more money in than what we pay out.

Comment #20Joelinton and Saint-Maximin or similar, and another centre forward to compete with Joelinton are most important.
That’s three imperative additions.
If we play wing backs, you might think with three weeks to go in the window, we might end up sticking with Yedlin, Manquillo, Ritchie and Lazaar, who clearly is a left wing back, and who Bruce knows.
In midfield, you’ve got five on the books already who we might go with and give us enough in Shelvey, Ki, Longstaff, Hayden and Colback, who you’d hope rarely if ever was needed.
If we get the three attackers, we’ll have a fit for purpose group I think. If we can also replace Colback and Lazaar we’ll have done very well, but with three weeks to go that probably looks a bridge too far.

5 million net spend in 12 years on players
You have any idea what our total income was in that time ?
I’m guessing it was more than about 400 grand a year

Comment #23Every season I say the same, that we should look to the championship because it’s similar in style to the premier, the players have already adapted, it’s a similar quality to most the top European leagues, and the value is great. Che Adams will score 10-20 this season and be sold for £80m at least and I believe he only cost £15m. Other players like Tammy Abraham & Jarrod Bowen would also be reliable bets and being English their value will sore after just a handful of EPL goals.

And for good reason
One of the richest clubs in the world ran on a shoe string for decades , cut back to the bone
With a net spend on players at 400 grand ish a year
With one of the lowest wage bills on the league
I think I’m not stupid enough to believe we somehow have running cost similar to manu

Assuming you mean revenue, in the 11 years Ashley owned us (upto 30th June 2018)
Tv income : £651.4M
Match day : £292.5M
Commercial : £209.9M
So more or less about £1.15B

Comment #40Hahaha, yeah, not getting carried away, but as I said getting those three attackers is imperative, and I’ll add, ideally the understudy to Joelinton or competition for him should have a bit of experience, someone tough and who knows the ropes.
