Calcio Mercato are reporting that AC Milan may look at Argentine central defender Federico Fernandez as a low cost option this summer.
AC Milan have certainly been linked with a slew of central defenders this summer. Earlier this month they were linked as having an interest in Fabian Schar which then turned into Schar being proposed to AC Milan.
They have also been linked with Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren, Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, and Fiorentina’s German Pezzella. Pezella’s agent was even filmed at AC Milan’s headquarters last week but the report in Calcio Mercato says that Fiorentina are not interested in selling the Argentine.
Federico Fernandez– only signed a two year deal last summer
This is where Federico Fernandez and Valencia’s Victor Ruiz come in according to the new report in the Italian outlet. Both players are seen as cost efficient alternatives to the more expensive players mentioned above.
Both Fernandez and Ruiz are thirty years old and have only one year left on their contracts. According to the report, AC Milan see them as being available this summer due to their contracts running out next year.
If Newcastle are not going to extend Federico’s contract, it may be a good time to move him on. We have a plethora of centre-backs and he is probably fourth in the pecking order when all are fit.
Newcastle paid around £7m for him from Swansea last summer and may want to recoup at least a part of that fee rather than let him leave on a free next summer.
