Get French Football News has reported via their Twitter account that Newcastle are back in for Nice winger Allan Saint-Maximin according to L’Equipe.
Newcastle United are back in for OGC Nice winger Allan Saint-Maximin, after Les Aiglons brought their asking price down. More follows tomorrow. (L’Éq)
— Get French Football News (@GFFN) July 21, 2019
Newcastle have been tracking the versatile Frenchman for some time and according to a report in Nice Matin from late last month, have already agreed personal terms with him.
As with Joelinton, Newcastle may have been working on deals prior to the arrival of Steve Bruce. They could have a plan in place to get Saint-Maximin in quickly after Joelinton is hopefully announced today.
Allan Saint-Maximin– already in contact with the player?
It had been reported in the local press that there were a few deals lined up for this week. We had assumed that it was Joelinton and former Chelsea midfielder Kyle Scott that were in the pipeline but maybe there is some movement of Saint-Maximin as well.
It was Get French Football News who originally reported of Newcastle’s interest back in May and then the fee was assumed to be between £20-30m. If it has come down from that or is in the low £20m range, this could be a great deal for Newcastle.
He made 36 appearances scoring 6 goals while adding 4 assists this past season for Nice. He is a very versatile attacker who can play on both wings or up front as a striker.
He played 17 games centrally as either a striker or just behind the striker, the with the other 19 games on either wing so he would be able to provide cover in multiple areas.
He has only just turned 22 in March which certainly fits the profile of a transfer target under Mike Ashley.
We’ll have to see if anything comes of this over the next week but we hope there is more than just Joelinton to be announced as time is of the essence for Newcastle to strengthen this squad.

Comment #3Something to ponder. Ashley was a big fan of buying REALLY cheap and selling at a profit. It’s his business model in everything he does.
Joelinton at £46M and Saint-Maximin at £25M (if that’s to be believed) would go against that. Yes, he could be hoping that he’ll sell for double eventually but that would need a manager/coach who could actually get them to do their best stuff and improve their value.
I’m at a loss to understand whatever’s happening at the club. Nothing makes sense.

That’s why no-one understands us – we have mind bending, unique views on life at NUFC.

Comment #12Markaccus, for what it’s worth, you and I have been beating a very similar drum the last couple of weeks.
I don’t dislike Bruce as an individual, the Mackem thing is tedious and I’m stuggling to be excited about any new signings, welcome though they will be.
Coach – irrelevant
Signings – irrelevant
Results (especially in pre-season) – irrelevant
The only thing that matters for the long-term health of our club is the removal of our illustrious leader. Once Ashley goes, the brakes can come off the club and we can start to see it fulfilling its potential once more.
The road to recovery may be long and difficult, but it has to start somewhere. We must not lose our focus on the main priority and spitting bile at Bruce and any inbounds is a waste of our energy.

Comment #14RobLeenio and Markaccus – that’s what’s confusing me. You take an uninspiring manager like Bruce and supposedly the first signing the club makes is costing £46M and the only way he can increase in value, (if following his usual business pattern), is under the guidance of a better manager who can actually play him properly..
Makes absolutely no sense. I’ve got theories but that’s because I’m a software developer and I have to at least attempt to see some logic in things that occur.

Comment #19I don’t think a takeover is happening anytime soon, certainly not before the season starts but I think there’s an agreement in principle behind the scenes that will see BZG, (probably), acquire the club this season. I think while Ashley has been enjoying his free advertising his current financial situation is going to see him divest his toxic holdings and move into more stable, predictable areas like property.
Sports Direct is worth 43% less than it was a year ago. 67% down from 5 years ago. For a man who famously tells everyone that his wealth is ‘wallpaper’ money, it means that his net value is down an equal amount nearly because most of his money comes from the shares he owns in SD. He is not on the bones, but I imagine his desire to keep his net worth over a certain amount would be important to him.
If we are getting Joelinton in at £46M then that flies contrary to how he’s invested in players before, same philosophy as his tat shops; get em cheap and sell them for more. The acquisition of Joelinton is a massive gamble, even for a man who likes a gamble. I can’t see him making or authorising that kind of purchase without some kind of fall back.
I know when Mansour was in the process of buying Man City, he had someone put on the board to start the ball rolling on transfers. We don’t have any new directors and I think he wouldn’t work like that because Ashley is notoriously private in his business and I think he’d not want people to know he was selling; would look like he was desperate and that could have a knock on effect.
Again all pure speculation but something just doesn’t add up. Everything is so out of character. Even the bloody club getting a lick of paint doesn’t fall within usual operating parameters.

Comment #21Job @5 try not lying for a second. Just try
I support our unfortunate squad for doing as well as they can given the resources, none of this is their fault. I hope they do better than Ashley evidently wants them to do but I know that he will make life difficult if Bruce dares attempt a cup run, and will pull the plug on transfers if relegation is a remote possibility.
As ever, I’m not behind Bruce, never will be he’s Ashley’s stooge. I’m not supporting Ashley soI won’t spend money with him. I will support but not pay into SDFC. That’s all. You carry on with the clown with your lying and stupid insults if you like but come back to this post to check once in a while before lying again, eh?

Comment #25Hibbit, to be fair (not having a pop at you, btw, just saying) it was never his money, it was always the club’s and therefore belonged more to us than to him, morally if not legally. I know what you’re saying re the current situation, though – even the Almiron transfer seemed out of character in terms of spend.
Muz, confusion is the fallback position for us all at the moment. The communication blackout from the club is as bad as ever, at a time when we want to know more than ever before just what is going on.
A simple statement on the chances of a takeover completing (any takeover in general, it doesn’t have to mention specific buyers), the real story behind Rafa’s departure, a confirmation of the club transfer policy and clarity over who is making the decisions on inbound and outbound transfers would go a long way to at least letting us know what’s going on.
We wouldn’t even have to like what we heard, the current vacuum is far worse than any more bad news would be, in my opinion.

Comment #28Ashley has always paid for players in one lump sum but sold them in phased payments as far as i am aware, the new approach seems to be we can’t compete paying for players that way so…
Joelinton costing lets say 15 million 2019,10 million 2020, 10million 2021..and so on. Effectively alowing him to still make a profit. Where this may fall down is if he doesnt sell them at a profit. However he is a gambler so it still fits in my opinion.
If he brings in the now mooted 5 players followed by carroll or welbeck on a free after the window shuts we do stand a chance.
My concern is we keep our best players to stay up and build on what we have, which is a sound defence apart from right back, need to bolster left back to, we have almiron, shelvey, longstaff as quality after that. 2 strikers, 1 winger, dm, full back would do that.

Comment #32As it stands, and assuming (I know) we get them all over the line, we could potentially start the new season with a front three of Almiron, Joelinton and Saint-Maximin. That would be a Hell of a trio, which could potentially rival any in the Premier League.
It feels a great deal like Firmino (Joelinton), Salah (Almiron) and Mane (Saint-Maximin).
Yet, I’m unable to be excited about it as I know the club will still have Ashley’s boot on its throat and signing these players is merely papering over the cracks. It might be posh wallpaper, but at the end of the day the underlying problems will remain.

Comment #35RobLeenio – the blackout is what’s actually giving me even more thought on the matter. If BZG made statements to say they want/are buying NUFC and that isn’t the case, then the club is expected to quash those statements; in fact, it’s an obligation I’d say. But you get no admissions or denials from the club and we STILL haven’t had it.
What we do have is a concerted effort by our regime friendly journos to pour cold water on any mention of BZG or any other party that might be interested in the club. I’m sticking with BZG as the choice because out of all of the potential buyers we’ve had lined up they’ve gone so far as to set up companies and engage solicitors to do their work. That doesn’t happen when you’re a tyre kicker.
I’d suspect that since NUFC is a large asset held by Ashley, he’d be worried that his intention to sell could be construed as a sign of weakness in his position at SD or worries over the share prices. Investment firms smell blood in the water and that share price could drop even further and that’s why we have a blackout and his mates trying to poo poo the deal in the papers. So he’d never admit it in that case.
He’s also stymied and can’t state openly he isn’t selling because that would be an official announcement and that could drive his share price up. Which would be good for him in the short term but his taking on of toxic debt from HoF as just one example would bring it back down. He makes a statement that affects share price and someone loses out because of it, he’s actually broken the law.
Again, pure speculation, but there’s something very strange going on at that club. More so than ever.

doesn’t necessarily mean the club owns the player.
