Report – Newcastle Offered German Left-Back Sought By Liverpool And Barcelona

The Chronicle’s Mark Douglas is reporting that Newcastle have been offered in demand Augsburg left-back Philipp Max.

The player, however, is heavily linked with both Liverpool and Barcelona. His fee is about £18m and he would be perfect for Newcastle as a left wing-back.

The advantage Newcastle would have over Liverpool and Barcelona is that Max would be first choice for the Magpies while he would only be brought in as cover for both Liverpool and Barcelona, at least initially.

Philipp Max– Augsburg’s assist machine

Philipp Max, 25, has been at FC Augsburg since 2015 where he joined from Karlsruher for €750k. He is a product of the Bayern Munich academy but left on a free to join the excellent Schalke youth system in 2012.

He is primarily deployed as an attacking left-back but can also play as left-sided midfielder. This past season he made 34 appearances with 4 goals and 4 assists for Augsburg.

In 2017-18, he set the Bundesliga record for a defender with 13 assists. He is an excellent crosser of the ball and also takes a lot of Augsburg’s set pieces.

He is the son of former German striker Martin Max who led the German first division in scoring on two separate occasions.

Does the fact that The Mirror’s the club’s media partner is running the Longstaff-ManU link mean that Ashley’s softening us up for the inevitable? Sadly, that’s the way it seems to work under Ashley.

Bishop could tell the media to stop running such stories but he hasn’t.

Loving the fiction you’re writing today, you’re quite good at re writing history, have you considered a job in politics.

Would surprise me if Ashley has a mantra that includes an agreement with top clubs that are unsure of a player but would let nufc take the chance and see if it works out and then they will sign in in 1 year for an agreed price, look at gini to liverpool that deal was pre agreed before he even signed for NUFC that he’d move on within a year.
