Can Newcastle Beat The Big Boys To Bundesliga Assist Machine?

On Tuesday, the Chronicle had reported that Newcastle were interested in Augsburg left-back Philipp Max. They intimated that he was mentioned to Steve Bruce as a possible target.

The Daily Express have followed up with a new report from last night that the left-back is being considered by Newcastle.

The player is an excellent attack-minded wing-back who is one of the better crossers in all of the Bundesliga. He is 25-years-old and has the pace to bomb down the left and the accuracy to execute pin-point crosses into the box.

He is said to be available for £18m and would be a great addition to Newcastle.

Philipp Max– Augsburg’s assist machine

He is primarily deployed as an attacking left-back and would fit perfectly in a back five where Matt Ritchie played the second half of last season. This past season he made 34 appearances with 4 goals and 4 assists for Augsburg.

However, it was in 2017-18 that he set the Bundesliga record for assists by a defender with 13. He also takes a lot of Augsburg’s set pieces.

The downside is that he is being tracked by both Liverpool and Barcelona. However, they are both seeking him as cover while Newcastle would presumably want him in the first eleven.

Liverpool are looking at Max to deputize for Andrew Robertson and basically replace Alberto Moreno in the squad. Moreno’s contract was not renewed and he has since joined Villarreal.

Barcelona reportedly have Max as a back-up plan if they are unable to acquire Junior Firpo from Real Betis. However, that move is making decent progress.

At Barcelona, Philipp Max would still have to battle it out with Jordi Alba who only just turned 30 this past March and has shown no signs of slowing down. Last season he had 54 appearances with 3 goals and 17 assists for the La Liga champions.

So if Newcastle want Max and are willing to pay the £18m for him, we think they certainly would have a good chance of getting him.

This is a link that we hope has something to it. And in today’s market, £18m should not be a deal-breaker for a Premiership club in desperate need for an attacking left wing-back like Max.

This lad would be great and if we could get Wilson from the bin dippers with an option to buy if we were loaning him. He’d fit right into fattys transfer remit.

Still like the you lad from Brazil very similar to Rashford. If we get ASM I would mind giving him a run upfront. Very quick, loads of skill and can finish. Convert from a winger like Henry. I would be interested in seeing how Gayle would get on with playing off a big man and with supply from Miggy? Night get ten for the season….think I have sunstroke, damn being ginger!

Yeah, that is pretty much exactly what we should do, and probably want to, but with just over two weeks to go, we’ll likely not have the time. You’re looking at ten deals in and out. More likely we’ll see five or six.

I understand the limitations of Gayle and colback and I reckon both are of lower prem/upper championship standard. But to be fair to both saivet and lazar I’ve never seen enough of. Senior player wise our squad must be pretty big. And therefore lots of wages.. the issue with that is it’s eating into potential transfer funds. If we actually trimmed the squad we could have better quality less quantity. Losing Joselu was a good start. I’d say we have more than 2 per position currently so we’re in good shape numbers wise but in building squads you should always upgrade the weakest position first.
To me that is right back! So many goals came from that weakness. Only by playing 3 cb could we cover for Yedlin.

I’d very happily see both Saivet and Colback moved on resulting in an upgrade for Diame brought in, but yeah one or the other may end up being used. Saivet I’d prefer to Colback, they are both capable footballers, but I don’t think either really do the job even at fifth choice at this level.

I think Lazaar would get very probably get turned inside out in the EPL, roasted. Nice looking player but seemingly doesn’t have the necessary bottle or intensity defensively from what I’ve seen. You want players who’ll win the ball and get to loose balls first.

    Nicky,
I wouldn’t rule the outsiders off just yet. In recent years manquillo, Diame, perez and Hayden have turned it round and usually at least one forgotten man benefits from a change of manager. Id wager one of them becomes at least an important squad player.

Yeah saw Saivet play in the Europa League against Man U at Old Trafford in I think a semi with St Etienne a few years back, in the number ten role, scored a cracker and was buzzing for 90 minutes, he starred. He’s an accomplished International, but the guys been around for three years without being trusted, so there’s something fundamentally not right with him in this league, you’d have to think.

Our squads quite trim. In years gone by we had loads of sh*te hanging round the squad like riviere. I have to give him credit where it’s due, if theres one thing charnleys good at apart from arse kissing, its moving on the wasters he’s helped sign or at least get them out on loan.

There’s two managers shunned him and he hasn’t performed great on loan yet he was man of the match in the two games I remember him playing. Hes a mystery. Didn’t lascelles say he was one of the best players at the club? Must be a motivation or consistency thing.

What a lot of people on this blog seem to be missing is that Bruce will be supported by Jamal, who will be inciting the squad who, in turn, will be very much in favour of proving that it was them rather than Rafa who kept us up for two seasons running. The commitment and discipline that Rafa instilled is still there. Bruce is sharp enough to milk that legacy.

I imagine a good chunk of the old £100m from tv money gets spent on wages… everybody seems to forget that you have to pay footballers silly money plus bonuses not just buy them! 28 senior players wages plus coaching staff…

I’m surprised nobody is mentioning Kyle Scott. You would think as a free agent he would choose the club which would guarantee him first team playing time, so he wouldn’t be coming to us unless he was going to be in our senior squad.

He looks like a cultured footballer, definitely an attacking mid with the potential to slot in at 10 comfortably. He’s slight of frame but has grown up in the English game so presumably can handle (or at least avoid) the physical aspect.

I know very little about the lad other than what I’ve seen on Youtube (I know) but he looks like a canny and versatile player.

Actually, we do indeed know where a big chunk of last season’s TV money went – it went straight into Ashley’s back pocket as a £30M loan repayment. Another good chunk went on paying down some undefined liabilities which has been interpreted as player wages for players not in the squad – those like Lazaar and Colback who were on loan.

Not ideal, Rafa could have done with that cash to be spent on the squad. It would even have even better spent on upgrading the training facilities. However, it wasn’t. It was a legacy of our relegation and poor squad planning, which in turn was a result of poor management by Charnley in first appointing and then standing by Steve McClaren for too long and then inflicting some below-par players on long contracts on the club.

Still can’t believe McClaren was a board Director at NUFC.

By my reckoning we have 3 extra players in the squad currently… to get it down to the required 25. So three need selling or loaning out minimum. Gayle and colbacks wages will be chunky. We need to move a minimum of 4 players on to bring one in and it could be any of; Gayle, Arrons sterry, Lazar, colback, Murphy. Elliot, saivet, Darlow, woodman (Loan) that almost half the squad outside of the first team that aren’t currently up to the standard.

Murphy’s dangerous in the final third. Fast, goes past players either side, often with ease, runs clear of defenders, has a decent delivery, and can also finish. I’d keep him and make a final decision on him at the end of the season. Needs a bit more confidence and to find another level in the other two thirds of the pitch

Do we reckon sterry could play in premier league? If not why is still here except for a year of his contract to run out? At 23 you’d think he should be taking Rb from manq n yedlin

Sterry isn’t bad, swings in a decent ball, but with Yedlin and Manquillo ahead of him, and with the right being an area we’d like to strengthen, he’ll likely be moved on.

If you actually look at the numbers financially you will realise that the financial fair play rules are being flaunted in modern football.. the trick to it is to not invest lost of money but instead pay loads into a club as sponsorship. That’s how Man City have effectively bought the game. If Ash wanted to do it he could easily. Just start paying loads for the sports direct adds.

Nicky i played wing for ages, obviously at a low level. But its a confidence position. You can even play it well or badly by mood. I slagged off rafa for spending a lot of money on murphy and id like to be wrong. He lack confidence. I dont rate aarons either. Nice to talk football tonite.

Yeah the politics of the club tends to dominate, for obvious reasons, but for sure there’s plenty going on with the football side too to occupy our thoughts at the moment, and it’s far from bad, considering Rafa built a solid hardworking group, and there is money to spend to strengthen us as an attacking force. Way more enjoyable to be talking football, with a bit of guarded optimism, despite our ongoing concerns about the owner.
