Can Newcastle Beat The Big Boys To Bundesliga Assist Machine?

On Tuesday, the Chronicle had reported that Newcastle were interested in Augsburg left-back Philipp Max. They intimated that he was mentioned to Steve Bruce as a possible target.

The Daily Express have followed up with a new report from last night that the left-back is being considered by Newcastle.

The player is an excellent attack-minded wing-back who is one of the better crossers in all of the Bundesliga. He is 25-years-old and has the pace to bomb down the left and the accuracy to execute pin-point crosses into the box.

He is said to be available for £18m and would be a great addition to Newcastle.

Philipp Max– Augsburg’s assist machine

He is primarily deployed as an attacking left-back and would fit perfectly in a back five where Matt Ritchie played the second half of last season. This past season he made 34 appearances with 4 goals and 4 assists for Augsburg.

However, it was in 2017-18 that he set the Bundesliga record for assists by a defender with 13. He also takes a lot of Augsburg’s set pieces.

The downside is that he is being tracked by both Liverpool and Barcelona. However, they are both seeking him as cover while Newcastle would presumably want him in the first eleven.

Liverpool are looking at Max to deputize for Andrew Robertson and basically replace Alberto Moreno in the squad. Moreno’s contract was not renewed and he has since joined Villarreal.

Barcelona reportedly have Max as a back-up plan if they are unable to acquire Junior Firpo from Real Betis. However, that move is making decent progress.

At Barcelona, Philipp Max would still have to battle it out with Jordi Alba who only just turned 30 this past March and has shown no signs of slowing down. Last season he had 54 appearances with 3 goals and 17 assists for the La Liga champions.

So if Newcastle want Max and are willing to pay the £18m for him, we think they certainly would have a good chance of getting him.

This is a link that we hope has something to it. And in today’s market, £18m should not be a deal-breaker for a Premiership club in desperate need for an attacking left wing-back like Max.

Is he? I know he’s athletic, fast and has great ball skills, looks very lean, but I’d have thought Murphy the faster of the two, and maybe 3 or 4 cm taller and maybe 5 kg heavier.

I’ve seen Sterry play in a couple of cup games at SJP and he’s actually a very good footballer, full of passing. He and Longstaff have always had a good understanding when I’ve watched the U23s on a stream, which is a big plus, and he plays a mean cross into the box.

He doesn’t have the best pace so may get caught out against the quickest wingers in the PL and when I’ve seen him his positioning has been off at times. Yedlin also loses his position from time to time but has the pace to recover, Sterry doesn’t.

I imagine that the reason he hasn’t been moved on yet is that there is a very good footballer in there ready to be coached out. Maybe this season could be his breakthrough season, but time is running short for him with just a year left on his contract.

SDFC, yep that’s what I meant, we haven’t seen the accounts for last year yet.

Think it was revealed by Charnley at the last Fans’ Forum before the accounts came out.

Scary that the last Forum was nearly a year ago….

SDFC: Bruce has a record of 1.12 Points Per Game which equates to 43 points in a season. Not relegation numbers although he HAS been relegated twice. With really crap teams and not really PL teams before or since. Hull. And Brum, who he then got promoted.

If were getting that frenchie this guy would be the icing on the cake, but it’s hard to see him spending another 40M on two players. God it’s a pity because he has the one thing we really lack, a good final ball and cross.

I see 3 wins and 3 draws in the first 14 matches. That’s under a point per game pace. Would Brucie survive that? I doubt it. We’d be in the bottom 3 by then I would think.

richie on his day can deliver some nice ones in with pace but until i see the new lad i will miss the way perez could just glance them in .
Other concern is the free kicks around the box with rondon gone, just when he was starting to find his range too.
a dead ball specialist def required and i don’t think shelvey is the consistent answer ..just hope its not left to the ginger pirlo

Ofd…. I really dont rate richie he can have a good game but so can anyone. He loves passing backwards which is so soul destroying and he literally never passes to Miggy which I think is a huge weakness. Hes a fine player to have on the bench as is Dummet but were kidding ourselves if we think they are anything more than that. They just dont have that next level and consistency to be starting, and I think if we are to try improve we should be looking at replacements.

Dummnet for some reason always gets a hard time here ,ok he is not the most fluid and watchable footballer but to me he is one of those “does what it says on the can” types .
We seemed to be a lot better balanced once he was back in the side last season and results improved .
Whether that was down to a “safer” player or just we had the horrible fixtures out the way is anyone’s guess.
the whole richie / miggy thing i think was just miggy going on massive bursts and a lack of understanding / wavelength which after a pre season together should be sorted hopefully.
Richie again i agree isn’t the greatest but he is one of those players other teams hate to play against..aggressive and a constant pain in the arse .He never stops running and does tend to get those goals just when we need them like Bournemouth last year.
As good as this french lad might be we need insurance in case he doesn’t hit the ground running .remember cabella and thauvin ?

    OP,

you asked me a question last night re: advertising income (or lack of wrt to SD).

I don’t know the answer as its not something that would ever be made public.

However, there are a couple of ways we could make an educated guess :-
comparison to other clubs who do release that kind of information, or deduction from what we do know.

Bournemouth breakout their commercial revenue into it’s various streams and in their latest accounts their sponsorship and advertising was £1.8M (but I don’t think this is a fair comparison). Leicester City also do the same thing, and their’s is £14.2M (which is probably closer to ours). However, you have to remember this is from their entire sponsorship and advertising for the year.

the other way to look at this is to deduce it from what we know about our accounts.
its been widely reported that FUN88 pay £6.5M / year for their contract with us (I would suggest that is the upper bound we should use).

if you look at NUFC accounts our entire commercial revenue has been pretty stable at ~£26M for several years (stagnant maybe a better word). However, in the recent championship year our commercial revenue dropped by £13M, the reason given was that we lost the PL central sponsors (Barclays, Carling etc.).
so if we say we had four PL central sponsors then that £13M would equate to £3.25M from each one.

so, we have an upper bound of £6.5M and a lower bound of £3.25M per year – and SD advertising “value” is probably somewhere in between.

Anyway, just some numbers and food for thought, that’s probably the best educated estimate I can come up with.

Cheers buddy, I’d done a similar guess a few years back with Charlton as a comparison.

We cant get exact figures so I was just looking for best guess.

A lot will have to do with size placement and number of slots in the ground are taken.

I really just want to know how much hes not paid the club and how much it is compared to the loan, he’s must have had it back in spades again.

Thanks again, I’m going to have a hunt around and see what else is around.

Does that mean Liverpool will move to Goodison.
