Sky Sports is reporting that Southampton striker Charlie Austin is on a list of potential targets head coach Steve Bruce is mulling over.
Lyall Thomas also states in the report than Newcastle made an inquiry into Austin’s availability a few weeks ago. Football Insider 247 did a report over a week ago saying that Newcastle were interested in signing Austin.
This is what Wayne Veysey said about Newcastle’s interest in Austin:
Newcastle United are plotting a bid to sign newly available Southampton striker Charlie Austin, Football Insider understands.
A Newcastle source has told Football Insider the club have turned their attention to Austin after he was transfer listed by Southampton.
There does seem to be something in the link and over a week ago Southampton boss Ralph Hassenhuttl left Austin out of their pre-season training camp in Austria.
Charlie Austin– frozen out at Saints
The fee for Charlie Austin is reportedly £8m which to us seems a bit high for a 30-year-old with just one year left on his contract who is not wanted by his club.
We would rather see Andy Carroll brought back than spend money on Charlie Austin. However, if they could maybe get the fee close to £3-4m he could be worth it.
He is also on a rapid decline in form as he scored only 2 goals in 25 Premier League appearances last season. If Newcastle were to bring in Austin, he could possibly do a job late in the game. He is still a very good finisher though offers little else at this stage.
We still have our doubts that Mike Ashley would allow a 30 year to be brought in for a fee especially when there are so many available for nothing.
It will be interesting to see where this one goes but we are skeptical that this will come to fruition.
