Mike Ashley Tries To Atone For Newcastle Mistakes But It’s Too Little Too Late

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, Mike Ashley has seemingly atoned for all of his Newcastle mistakes. And while there have been many, we have to wonder why this is being done now. Well, our wondering is complete. It did not take too long to come to the conclusion that he is now willing to talk because he is in a heap of trouble.

We have to understand that this is a man in the abyss at the moment. This is a wounded animal with his back against the wall and he will do anything to escape the clutches of culpability. His empire is crumbling around him and we must take that into account no matter what he says.

While we accept his admonishments of how poorly he has run this football club, we are skeptical as to the true nature of his comments.

Why is he saying this now, on one of the darkest days of his career as a businessman? Where were these comments when Newcastle fans were in an unnavigable darkness as to the direction of this club? Nothing then when one of the best things to happen to this club in well over a decade walked away to China of all places.

So, it is now that he comments on Rafa. A full month after he released a statement of his departure. Not good enough. Not by a long shot. We’ve had a month to stew over this and now he comes out looking for sympathy. Like Rafa is the villain. Well, it’s too late for that. If what he says has any bearing on reality, then it should have been said long ago. It rings hollow now.

It is now that he makes these comments. Now when he does a mea culpa. Now when his skin is on the line. Nothing before. Nothing when Newcastle United fans were left on a razor’s edge between joy and despair. Now he comments when “no comment” has been his signature motto.

We have provided the link to the interview with Mike Ashley if anyone wants to read it. We do suggest that you do. These are the comments you would want from your owner. These are the comments that Mike Ashley should have made over a decade ago. The fact that he makes them today when his beloved Sports Direct is crumbling, speaks volumes.

He knows exactly what needs to be done to run this football club. He can play the mea culpa and the “I was naive” game all he wants. He has known all along what was needed, and he willfully failed to run this club as it deserved to be run. He failed us.

Again, a lot of what he says is absolutely correct. But why now? In conclusion, it has a lot to do with his current situation.

And Mike, if you truly believe what you say, it’s never too late to prove it. Invest in this club. I’ll call your bluff. Go on and prove that your words have meaning.

I’ll not hold my breath.

£40m on Joelinton, so far, that could be it in which case you may well be correct, but if some of the transfers mooted by Neil and Ed happen, then the picture changes.
Of course selling some of the clubs silver (players) to underwrite these (possible) new players changes the picture yet again.
All we can do is wait and see what happens!
That last sentence has no bearing on the Ashlie out situation by the way, I’m only talking about transfers.

I’m going to try to be balanced because it’s a really emotional subject and there’s a million words that could be written. Therefore, I’m going to actually ignore what Ashley said tonight. In fact, for the purposes of this post, I’m going to assume that whatever Ashley said is right. I don’t believe it is for a second, but to dissect it would take too long and many other posters have already done it.

Instead, I’d like to focus on the questions that weren’t asked, or if they were, the answers that weren’t included in the articles.

So, Mike, why did you not ask Rafa if he wanted Joelinton before the medical was done? Would that not have saved everyone time and effort and not run the risk of isolating and annoying your greatest asset?

What happened to the plans for a new training centre that Rafa saw and discussed with an architect when he first arrived at the club?

While we’re at it, are those plans still relevant? What’s the status of the planning permission and is there any plan to break ground any time soon?

What happened with the Strawberry Place land? Did the club see any of the money from its sale to those property developers? If not, where did it go? After all, you’ve said that you take no money from the club, but what about assets?

Talking about assets, what is the purpose of you holding the intellectual property of the club, such as the club crest, in MASH Holdings? Is it so that you can cream the royalties of any sale of club-branded merchandise?

What is the relationship of the club to Sports Direct? Is the club shop a Sports Direct franchise? If so, where do the profits from the shop go to and how much of it does the club see?

On that, how about the corkage rights on the club bars? Who benefits from every pint sold at the ground? What about food – who sees the benefits from the catering deals that the club have signed?

Why did you choose to take back your interest free loan of £33M last Summer, when you knew that money could help Rafa to build on a team which had over-performed the previous season and push on into true top-half mediocrity? Did you think the timing was appropriate?

Do you think that Rafa made up his mind to not renew his contract at that point, Mike, and that everything you did after that, including signing Almiron, was an empty gesture – a case of too little too late?

See? Objective and reasonable! I’m sure that there are plenty of other questions we can ask, too.

If SD sports did go down then a lot of people will lose their jobs. Yes they are underpaid and overworked but they still unfortunately depend on these jobs.

Remember that folks when you are wishing Ashlie into penury, he’ll be the last to suffer!

If there was just 10m difference in valuation with bzg, why didn’t he just scrap the 20m plan for training facilities and instead of putting 20m of his money into getting joelinton, then he could have reduced the asking price by 40m. It could be our last chance to ever compete in our lifetimes. Please just sell. How much would it take for all supporters to pay the extra ten million? 50,000 x 200 quid.

Suddenly the helicopter visit to the training ground makes sense, too.

PR is like a dance, and like a dance it has to be choreographed. Ashley’s trip up to Newcastle – the first to the training ground since Pardew was boss, by the way – was merely so he could refer back to it in this interview.

It’s so transparent it’s laughable. How did we not actually see this interview coming? I’m actually surprised that it wasn’t videoed with some shots thrown in of him meeting the players. I mean, they would have to have a laugh with him, quite apart from him being their boss, he’s one of the richest men in the country and they’d have a camera shoved up their nose.

I aint trying to sugar coat anything, he’s tried to be clever and come unstuck, I’ve got no problem with that but even if all of his workers (slaves if that makes you happy) do hate him and most of them probably do, they still need to put bread on the table. It’s them who suffer and who I feel sorry for.

Pull that apart as much as you like but it doesn’t help them.

Bill, you’re right of course, the ideal situation would be for Ashley to lose the club and his SD empire and for a wealthy benefactor to take over both – not necessarily the same one – so that Ashley disappears into obscurity once more, but the fans and the SD workers get what they want / need.

Sadly, the reality could be quite different.

If not more of those “slaves” will be dragged into this and kept there until he dies

It has to end somewhere and in reality will be better for everyone once its over

    Its ending Monday
