Foot Mercato are reporting that Newcastle are pondering whether to activate Porto forward Moussa Marega’s €30m release clause. They report also that West Ham are also looking at bidding for the player.

There are a couple of issues with this from both teams’ perspectives, however. First, West Ham have recently bought French Striker Sebastien Haller from Frankfurt for a club record £45m.
Are they really going to spend close to £30m on another forward? While Marega does tend to play in more of a withdrawn role and is certainly not a like for like with the classic centre-forward Haller, that would be a lot of money to spend this summer in the attack.
They have also bought attacking midfielder Pablo Fornais from Villareal for around £25m this summer.
Moussa Marega– will Newcastle trigger release clause?
The issue with this player from Newcastle’s perspective is the transfer policy under Ashley. The player is 28 years-old and would presumably fall outside of Mike Ashley’s age range for transfer targets.
That would especially be the case for a player who would cost as much as Marega. Ashley reportedly balked at buying Salomon Rondon at 29 years-old for £16.5m. So would he really sanction the purchase of a player for close to twice that amount who is just a year and a half younger?
Marega is certainly an exciting talent though. This past season he scored 21 goals with 11 assists in 47 appearances. While the year prior he scored 23 goals with 8 assists in 40 games.
He is generally deployed behind the centre-forward but can also play the lead role or out on the right. He is very good in the air and a clinical finisher. He would be a great addition to Newcastle’s squad and would really be an exciting player.
However at twenty-eight and for €30m, we just don’t see this one happening. Though we would be pleasantly surprised.

Comment #8NUFC’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson plays careful attention
to a potential signing’s attitude and character, which would give
the club pause for thought in any move for Allan Sainte-Maximin.
