Newcastle Striker Target Suffers Possible Serious Knee Injury In Preseason

As recently as a week and a half ago, Newcastle were linked with interest in French U21 international striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.

He has been linked with Newcastle throughout the summer with reports that Newcastle had even bid for the player.

Well, the player has recently suffered a knee injury and will now be assessed by a specialist as to its severity.

The tweet above roughly translates to:

#Bundesliga #Preparation worry # Mainz05 about the knee of Jean-Philippe Mateta! He arrived at the beginning of the OPEL Cup match of Mainz against Sevilla (halftime 0: 4) on crutches to the stadium – diagnosis not yet known! But looks more serious, right knee placed in a splint …

Mateta is an excellent young prospect. He is only 22-years-old and reminds us a bit of Demba Ba. He signed for Mainz last summer for €10M from Lyon. He had an outstanding debut season in the Bundesliga scoring 14 goals in 34 league appearances.

He was actually tracked by Newcastle last summer before joining Mainz as Yoshinori Muto came the opposite way to Newcastle.

Before completing his move to Mainz, the striker reportedly was keen on Newcastle. Team Talk reported the following last summer:

“Mateta is understood to be keen on making the move (to Newcastle), and Newcastle are keen, but as are a number of rivals – with the likes of West Ham, Leicester, and Everton also expressing an interest.”

We certainly hope that the injury is not too serious as he is an exciting young talent. It seems that Newcastle have moved on from Mateta as a target recently. It may have been because his fee is reportedly in the £35m range.

Kets if Nsoki is an attacking fullback then more than happy. Just doesn’t look like that when you watch his clips.

Munster I think you have a short memory. The biggest issue with our gks for over 10 years has been commanding the area on crosses (think Given, Harper, Elliot, Darlow etc). They have all been decent shot stoppers but never been able to relieve press on crosses. Dubs came in and completely changed that. It was like our defence everything was much better due to his ability to claim crosses. Even as recent as West Ham everything that come over was claimed confidently. It is certainly not a weakness of his.

Think we can safely say if Mikey boy brings in another 5 or so players. The fans will fall back into line singing the tune to the pied piper.

Nufc83 tbf it us a huge weakness of his, st the start of last season he was ridiculed for nervously punching away every cross, and he has often came for a ball and been left stranded in no mans land without getting the ball. He has gotten better but I would completely agree with Munster. It’s one of the reasons we are so poor at defending set pieces and crosses.

    Monday 8pm could be interesting
If Sports Direct Results remain unpublished ?

Would that be because Grant Thornton if they are Auditors are reluctant to sign them off because they’ve spotted something they don’t like
or because they’re not up to the job

    or both
Stand well clear of the fan

Also Bruce specifically said the only reason Dubs was not in the squad Is because he wanted to rotate the keepers. If it turns out he goes to PSG then that was clearly a lie, if hes now also lying for Ashley then we really know what a piece of Shít Bruce is.

I’ll hold my judgement till I know for sure either way as it’s only fair to give him a chance, but if Dubs goes next week I’m done with Brucie, it will be too obvious what he stands for to give him any more of my support if Dubs turns out to be sold.

Irish completely disagree I think although it maybe one of his weaker areas (as his overall game is so good) it’s still head and shoulders above anything we have had for many many years and above most keepers in the league.

My take on Keepers is that the ones who dominate the area give confidence to the defenders, who in turn also have confidence in their keeper with both feeling comfortable in any situation.

I’ve got no problems with Steve Bruce. Lets just get the 8 players in that we need and give him a chance. He’s a nice bloke and should be able to manage the dressing room. Rafa made a lot of mistakes in terms of player recruitment. Also got rid of our best players in Abeid, Mbabu, Thauvin, Doumbia, Ferreyra, Mbemba, Mitrovic, Krul, Marveaux etc.
