The Sun’s Alan Nixon has an article that Steve Bruce is planning to strengthen Newcastle’s midfield with a bid for Everton’s James McCarthy.
McCarthy was linked to Newcastle along with teammate Yannick Bolasie a couple of weeks ago.
In fact, James had been deemed a constant target when Rafa Benitez was at the helm but was always priced out of a move to Newcastle.
James McCarthy– long-term target now available
Nixon says that Steve Bruce and Newcastle are plotting a £5m move for the Republic of Ireland international. McCarthy, however, is 28-years-old and has a history of injuries.
While £5m would be a good deal for a Premier League experienced midfielder, Mike Ashley seems unwilling to sanction a few extra million to get top target Allan Saint-Maximin over the line. So we’ll remain skeptical on this link until we see that a bid is made.
We do have a good core in midfield at the moment with Sean Longstaff, Isaac Hayden, Ki Sung-yueng, and Jonjo Shelvey but really should be adding another body for depth.
They are a couple of injuries away from being short. Both Sean Longstaff and Jonjo Shelvey had major injuries last year. There is always Jack Colback who we suppose could do a job as cover.
In retrospect, it seems a poor decision to have let Mohamed Diame go. He’s worked with Steve Bruce at Hull City and has loads of experience. He would be a better option than Colback.
So maybe McCarthy has been identified as a good replacement for Diame. Though we do think if Newcastle bring in another midfielder it will likely be one quite a few years younger.

Comment #8Agree Jail for once. But if we got maximus and another attacker we might have a team with sone style which is more than we’ve had for most of the 45 ish years ive been on this gig. I have maintained my sons half love of nufc by holding them in 2nd position behind his new love Liverpool. I coulnt begrudge him. We needed Khaled but hey ho.

Comment #9good morning ladies and gents, lovely morning least its not chucking it doon 🙂 mr ballony so ashleys shite direct company hasnt commited fraud aye i think tax evation in belguim says different, if his company doesnt pay that bill there government will shut down his bank accounts and his tat shops there and confiscate the lot, the tax bill will go up and more fines to pay on top of it, then think of the other european countries he has shops in and there governments will be saying the same thing if hes done that in belguim he be doing it here lets send in the tax inspectors, under the leagues fit and proper tests they will order ashley to sell the club and dont forget about our very own tax departments ive no doubts with the news in belguim they be churning at the leash to get stuck into shite directs accounts here

Comment #20Jail i havent been on a lot recently so apologies if its been discussed. If ashleys liability at SD is limited, whats the bid deal for nufc? And if he is fined for tax evasion, will that mean he cant be a club owner. If not we are surely just whistling in the wind, which is what most of the screamers on here are doing most of the time anyway?

Were we really after Danny Rose, if so, what was Brewcey told in the initial meetings after the other eleven, I mean two managers knocked the job back. Did Brewcey honestly believe that we’d spend 20M on a 29 year old LB or was the story all just bollorx. If he was told they’d try and bring in his number one targets then surely that’s the first breach of trust when a position he knows is weak has immediately fallen flat, but surely Brewcey knew all this anyway. I’m confused.

any conviction world wide would stand against him, but don’t hold your breath on that that count these things drag on and on and a large majority of them just end up with a settlement and no conviction,

Comment #30Our club is slowly being suffocated by Ashley and, it has to be said Charnley.
There’s no real strategy; they buy Joelinton who’s got to be a big gamble and then apparently go for journeymen like McCarthey and the Hull city guy whatsisname.
They constantly go in with ridiculous bids that are laughable!
Now fatso is here forever! I said previously I was out if Rafa goes but Nufc is like a drug which as we know drugs have a big downside!
Ashley stayed in his staged interview in the Mail that spurs have a £40 million a year shirt deal cos they’re in the CL and that gives them an advantage. Yes it does Mike so why not at least try to get where they are instead of just surviving? But then I suppose he couldn’t take the money the way he does. Had anyone examined the accounts to find out where the money goes?

Comment #39As for Murphy jail. He always looked like a waste of money by rafa but if Bruce gets a tune out of him then hopefully you will acknowledge that. Maybe his man management ability and communication style, something jonjo referenced negativeky about rafa, will help bring the lad up.
