The Sun’s Alan Nixon has an article that Steve Bruce is planning to strengthen Newcastle’s midfield with a bid for Everton’s James McCarthy.
McCarthy was linked to Newcastle along with teammate Yannick Bolasie a couple of weeks ago.
In fact, James had been deemed a constant target when Rafa Benitez was at the helm but was always priced out of a move to Newcastle.
James McCarthy– long-term target now available
Nixon says that Steve Bruce and Newcastle are plotting a £5m move for the Republic of Ireland international. McCarthy, however, is 28-years-old and has a history of injuries.
While £5m would be a good deal for a Premier League experienced midfielder, Mike Ashley seems unwilling to sanction a few extra million to get top target Allan Saint-Maximin over the line. So we’ll remain skeptical on this link until we see that a bid is made.
We do have a good core in midfield at the moment with Sean Longstaff, Isaac Hayden, Ki Sung-yueng, and Jonjo Shelvey but really should be adding another body for depth.
They are a couple of injuries away from being short. Both Sean Longstaff and Jonjo Shelvey had major injuries last year. There is always Jack Colback who we suppose could do a job as cover.
In retrospect, it seems a poor decision to have let Mohamed Diame go. He’s worked with Steve Bruce at Hull City and has loads of experience. He would be a better option than Colback.
So maybe McCarthy has been identified as a good replacement for Diame. Though we do think if Newcastle bring in another midfielder it will likely be one quite a few years younger.

Comment #91We don’t need another midfielder. We play 2 in central midfield. We have Hayden, longstaff, shelvey, ki and colback who I’d guess is marginally better than McCarthy these days. Schar and Ritchie could go there if we had 4 injuries. We could do with someone as back up to almiron though. And back up for joelinton. And back up for the wingers we don’t even have yet.

Will have a nap a and then the German Grand Prix starts at 8.30 my time.
Luckily you only have to watch the first 3 laps now to know what the result will be and then can go back to sleep.

People on here thinks everybody should hate Ashley or your not a fan.
Ashley doesn’t anger me like it does others.we have had just as bad in the past.
Plus some people on here get there rocks off calling people multiples without a shred of evidence.

He is an riddle, wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.
And covered in blubber. So that makes it even harder to figure than what Churchill said about Russia.

Comment #109Thinking of some of Rafa’s bloopers signing wise.
You can see what looks like a worldy , but until
they are tested in the cauldron of the PL you are
taking a risk.
Achraf Lazaar is a current case in point.
I’m not saying he’s a worldy , but he has recently
looked like he’s getting his head round English footy
which was probably helped by his time at SWed.
Another is Manquillo who got dogs abuse at first
but is staring to look the biz.

Comment #113Rafa may have wanted Townsend. He bought Murphy. Poor purchase evidently. It happens, but any manager takes blame for that. Not her though. Who bought Schar and Ki. I presume charnley must get credit for that, by your logic. And please, this isnt pro ashley. You are incapable of separating anything from ashley. A rafa error, small or not, does not mean its all fat boys fault in terms of that error. We all want him out. We all want a proper owner.

Comment #117Great take on the ashLIE “interview” – well, a scripted piece from kba.
M H-J
@Hope541
My take on the MA interview: Rafa was a pain in the ass because he was constantly on my back wanting improvements to facilities new signings and expecting ambition whereas Bruce will take what he is given and will be happy and will leave me in peace oh and he is cheaper #nufc
