Premier League Club Plotting Move For Newcastle Defender

Mike McGrath of the Sun is reporting that Crystal Place are plotting a move for Newcastle centre-back Ciaran Clark.

He says that manager Roy Hodgson sees Clark as the perfect option to provide cover in central defense. The article also states that a fee of £5m is being prepared for the 29-year-old.

Central defense is one area that Newcastle have a wealth of options in currently. Even with Florian Lejeune still recovering from his knee injury, it is unlikely that Ciaran Clark will see much action this season barring an injury to either Jamaal Lascelles or Fabian Schar.

It is likely that while Florian is out Clark is the fourth choice behind Federico Fernandez and the aforementioned Lascelles and Schar. There is also Paul Dummett who can cover in central defense as well.

Ciaran Clark– scoring one of his 8 goals for Newcastle

However, Newcastle have used three at the back in two preseason games under Steve Bruce and for the second half of last season under Rafa Benitez.

If this formation is the one that Bruce plans on using going forward, he will need plenty of cover for the position.

Newcastle have also recently been linked with a couple of defenders in Burnley’s Ben Gibson and Preston’s Ben Davies. Earlier in the summer they were also linked with a move for Bristol City’s Adam Webster.

So if Ciaran Clark were to leave, Newcastle may be able to make a move for one of those three as cover and an injection of youth at the position.

Ciaran Clark only made 14 appearances last season for the club and none of those were after January. He has made a total of 72 appearances for the club since he joined from Aston Villa three summers ago.

    Bruce on Talksport

Asked who’s going to get #NUFC’s goals. Thinks Joelinton is a big hit, but he’s raw. Only seen Almiron “from afar”. Also then repeats that the difficult bit is scoring the goals, hoping for success in the next week or so. (Assuming he means transfers)

Even Steve Bruce is saying he doubts fans have the bottle to protest. If you’re listening to Bruce on @talkSPORT now- how can you say he’s NOT a yes man? He’s Mike Ashley’s wet dream. #nufc

I reckon Kelland Watts is good enough to play now, so selling Clark isn’t a bad move. It also frees up squad space.

I wonder if Charnley and Ashley are looking at the clubs around us who are in the relegation battle and are thinking on paper we have more than enough to survive against these teams:

Brighton haven’t really bought any one and are going to try be more attacking with this new manager without having the players

Burnley will be more of the same they will be struggling as teams adapt to the hoof it to the big man tactics

Palace could lose Zaha and not have enough time to invest the money they will finish bottom without him winning games on his own

Norwich are going to play a high pressing game with Grant Hanley at centre half…… lets see how that works out haha

Villa have signed a lot of players but 45 million on Mings and Targett!?None of them have been good enough for the premier league in their careers and the rest of the players are big risks

I mean potentially a solid 352 formation with Almiron and Joellinton should be better than most of those clubs surely? Yeah lets not bother spending anymore money lads got a Belgian tax bill to pay!

Because there hasn’t been anymore players moved out I can’t see how we can possibly bring in anymore? There doesn’t seem to be an effort to be getting rid of Colback , Lazaar etc?

The only one we seem to be trying to get rid of is Gayle and hes the only one that I would be trying to keep because if Linton buckles under the pressure then at least Gayle can play up front for us and get some goals he might even be quite good in the 352 playing with Linton rather than isolated up front on his own

Sad thing is Bruce won’t be sacked .
That’s what other we’ll run ambitious clubs do .
Charnley will give him 30 games in the bottom 3
Then hope for someone to scrape us out
No need to bother with cups as “we need to secure our place etc ”
We stay up after a win on the last day .euro easily avoided .
