Best Summer Spending For Four Years – But Tough Part Starts Now For Steve Bruce

This is turning out to be one of the best summer transfer windows under owner Mike Ashley since we spent over £50M net, back in 2015.

We had only just avoided relegation then under caretaker manager John Carver, after Alan Pardew had had enough, and left the club to join Crystal Palace in late 2014.

And Ashley seemed willing to put decent money out that summer for the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba, Florian Thauvin, and Ivan Toney – and all five players have since left the club.

Steve Bruce with Fabian Schar and Jack Colback

As a reminder here’s what we did in the summer transfer window four years ago – the summer before we were relegated again under Steve McClaren.

Newcastle have spent a net of £20M so far this summer and could end up actually spending money this summer as we did four years ago.

In the last three summers when Newcastle had world-class manager Rafa Benitez at the club – we made a profit of £31M in 2016, spent £12M net in 2017 and made a profit of £20M net last summer.

So at least for the three summer windows under Rafa, we made a profit of £39M.

You would have thought the time to spend money was when you have a world-class manager in place – who knows what he’s doing.

But it seemed like owner Mike Ashley wanted to retain control of the club and do it his way, as we found out six weeks ago when Rafa left.

So the club have reverted back to paying out the full fees for players and signing young players on long contracts.

We’ll just have to wait and see what happens, but that’s sound financial management.

The hard part starts now for Steve Bruce, but he’s done very well so far – given the toxic state of the club.

We hope Steve’s successful at Newcastle, but the main thing is for us to remain in the Premier League this season.

If Rafa had stayed, we had hoped to be looking higher than that – perhaps for a top-eight position.

We’ve had a top-eight position only once under Ashley when we somehow finished 5th back in 2012.

But maybe Steve Bruce and the lads can do that (top eight) this season – we certainly have the best squad we have had for several years.

So we have some hope for this season, and we’ll support Steve Bruce and the players as much as we can.

We also somehow have to force Mike Ashley to sell the club – hopefully before the end of the year.

Comments welcome.

Sorry for late reply re the U21s, I hadn’t ignored it.

I made a selection of players from the U23s on the NUFC site that I thought could easily provide backup for the main 25 man squad that included your cousin Kelland.

I haven’t time to do it again as I’m packing for my hols (Shoreham By the Sea, very exotic 🙂 )

Suggest you visit the site and make your own choice, there’s quite a few of them that are U21.

As I said earlier 22 gives as good as he gets, last night around a page or more was all aimed at one poster, 22.

2 wrongs dont make a right but when people who call themselves “fair and balanced” are pouring petrol on the thing they claim to want to stop I call “Bullshit”

Certain posters are out to disrupt not talk football or boycotts or anything Nufc related on a consistent basis.

Bruce needs to get a grip and make the right decisions not the popular decisions that give him comfort.

Gayle looks like an injury problem.
Colback doesn’t fit in and if he plays and starts giving away free kicks that the opposition can score from he will need to take shelter.
Elmohamady would be a mistake and his fourth club under Bruce. Are they related or something ? At 31 he’s not the option.

Bruce needs to show his mettle.

What’s your point about Hoffenheim? My point was the pundits consider us a poor club compared to our status 12 years ago; and I know we were struggling a bit when he bought us but we were still considering a top PL club.
Ashley’s mane is now toxic in business!

Another is that it derives from a term of abuse coined by the Scottish Jacobites in the 1745 Rebellion because of the defence of the town of Newcastle against them by supporters of King George (Geordie) II. The second theory is more plausible because the term Geordie is properly used for natives of Newcastle only.

You will see suggestions that it is because they used a miner’s safety lamp invented by George Stephenson, or because they supported King George during the ’45 Jacobite rebellion (the rest of Northumberland was Jacobite). Although they did in fact do both of these things it is just an example of the people of an area being called after the diminutive of a common name in the area. Geordie is a diminutive of George and was a common name, perhaps because of the support for King George. This is similar to Irishmen being called Paddies, Welshmen being called Taffies or Scotsmen being called Jocks. There is a difference in that Novocastrians are proud to be called Geordies whereas the other names are regarded as pejorative. Such names often start off being pejorative but then get adopted by the people – a good example of this is Yankee, which started off as an insult to rural Dutch settlers in upstate New York, being a diminutive of the Dutch Jan.

If Gayles injury is the same as he suffered previously then I fear he will not be ready to ready to play anytime soon.

Even when he returned fully healed last time (if he really was) he seemed to have no confidence to fully test it and was playing at way below what he was capable of. You can’t get away with that in the EPL and it shows.

Can’t see him getting many games myself.

Like for like so far in the window except with untested youngsters, the squad still needs a winger,ST and DM at least and they need to proven at this level if we’re to avoid a relegation battle.Theres plenty of money in the pot,but will the parasite spend it,I can’t see it.

Felonious I’m nobody’s “wing man” but I do object to the usual bullying and haranguing of someone you don’t agree with. Tests to see how good a supporter they are? That’s pretty shabby. How would you like it if we said you aren’t English or a Mag just a Newcastle swot? Would that hurt? Grow up you stomping oaf and stop calling people fools at one end of the spectrum or toffs at the other to make yourself look like a real supporter. The mayhem and unruliness of this place lately has been centred around unreasonable shouters and bullies like you.

I had never even heard of St Max until the last couple of weeks, so I could not make any judgement on him either.

I had seen Almiron in MLS which is a league played near Dinnington and Ponteland. He was the best player in the MLS and I know he will start to score soon for us.

“Bairn,” the Geordie word for a child, is Anglo-Saxon and Viking in origin, and the modern-day Swedish and Norwegian word for child is “barn.” Geordie pronunciation of many words also follows old Anglo-Saxon, for example “deed” (dead), “wrang” (wrong) and “hoos” (house).

“I couldn’t answer that question right now.
“I think it’s deadline day on Thursday, so you know, in football anything can happen.
“I’m not going to stand here and say to you: ‘This is me, I am 100% staying here’…
“I don’t know what can happen, football is a crazy game…
“But as I have said, I have really enjoyed pre-season.
“I have enjoyed the manager coming in.
“It has been good for me and good for the squad.
“I think especially after the off-season and obviously the uncertainty regarding Rafa Benitez.
“I think with Steve (Bruce) and his staff coming in – because it is not just Steve, his two staff, Clem (Stephen Clemence) and Aggers (Steve Agnew), have been fantastic as well.
“I think everybody is enjoying it and you can see on the pitch that everyone is enjoying playing under them.”

Newcastle United have yet to go back in with a new bid for Sweden international full-back Emil Krafth, according to the Sun.

The Magpies have zeroed in on the Amiens defender as a player they want to bring in and sent a bid to France in an effort to get a deal done.

The reason we have variations of names is down to when people first started writing their names down they wrote it as they said it.
