Best Summer Spending For Four Years – But Tough Part Starts Now For Steve Bruce

This is turning out to be one of the best summer transfer windows under owner Mike Ashley since we spent over £50M net, back in 2015.

We had only just avoided relegation then under caretaker manager John Carver, after Alan Pardew had had enough, and left the club to join Crystal Palace in late 2014.

And Ashley seemed willing to put decent money out that summer for the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba, Florian Thauvin, and Ivan Toney – and all five players have since left the club.

Steve Bruce with Fabian Schar and Jack Colback

As a reminder here’s what we did in the summer transfer window four years ago – the summer before we were relegated again under Steve McClaren.

Newcastle have spent a net of £20M so far this summer and could end up actually spending money this summer as we did four years ago.

In the last three summers when Newcastle had world-class manager Rafa Benitez at the club – we made a profit of £31M in 2016, spent £12M net in 2017 and made a profit of £20M net last summer.

So at least for the three summer windows under Rafa, we made a profit of £39M.

You would have thought the time to spend money was when you have a world-class manager in place – who knows what he’s doing.

But it seemed like owner Mike Ashley wanted to retain control of the club and do it his way, as we found out six weeks ago when Rafa left.

So the club have reverted back to paying out the full fees for players and signing young players on long contracts.

We’ll just have to wait and see what happens, but that’s sound financial management.

The hard part starts now for Steve Bruce, but he’s done very well so far – given the toxic state of the club.

We hope Steve’s successful at Newcastle, but the main thing is for us to remain in the Premier League this season.

If Rafa had stayed, we had hoped to be looking higher than that – perhaps for a top-eight position.

We’ve had a top-eight position only once under Ashley when we somehow finished 5th back in 2012.

But maybe Steve Bruce and the lads can do that (top eight) this season – we certainly have the best squad we have had for several years.

So we have some hope for this season, and we’ll support Steve Bruce and the players as much as we can.

We also somehow have to force Mike Ashley to sell the club – hopefully before the end of the year.

Comments welcome.

FWIW in the Blog Wars I think Tony Boresonly is poison on here and Toon 22 is vehemently anti-Ashley which is fine by me, correct stance. Those who have a go are tacit approvers of the regime who despite their protestations are burying their head in the sand solely wanting to talk about the football and/or continuing to attend matches. If you go to games now you are pro-Ashley. You’re literally paying him to continue making owning the club worthwhile. All the tread lightly, personal decision, don’t be divisive, how dare you tell others what to do mentality is bullshit. You’re lying to yourself and putting your own needs ahead of the club’s health – selfishly. Make a personal sacrifice and as a bare minimum, just for starters, #boycottArsenal

For me Phil Jones has got to be one of the most overrated footballers still can’t believe Man Utd have held on to him for so long but then again they do have a worse defence than ours. I hope this is just paper talk and no real interest.

Jib. Do you think Tarquin and Dodie wud be mates, being nufc fansand second row number 4 and 5? Or would you think Dodie would fall asleep listening to tarquin lecturing him on the sociology of football. Hmm let me work that one out.

No Eric that’s just your usual mischievous lying in control of you again there. If I call someone a fool or an idiot its generally because they are being one. Your mob have suspiciously landed here of late to join in singling out and ganging up on posters who are disturbed about the on going mess at this club. And what alternative do you offer apart from the bullying? That you are only a true fan if you keep your head down and pay Mike Ashley for your bland entertainment. You offer no solutions except to do nothing but shut up and accept things as they are. And if any disagree it’s time to shout and plague them. You aren’t NUFC fans you’re just sick lonely underachievers who can only have their little victories by trolling.

When we are linked with players like Phil Jones I worry we are cashing in on Schàr or Lascelles.

I still worry that there will be sales, ones we dont want to lose – but Ash will want to balance the books.

Dubs, Schàr , Longstaff, Lascelles, Shelvey could all bring in decent ‘ undisclosed ‘ sums of money.

Just hope it’s the likes of Colback, Elliott, Saivet, Atsu or even Muto that go and not our better players.

Aye me to mate and I think it will be a good one as well.

As I’ve said recently I won’t allow my hatred for Ashley control my feelings for this beloved club no more. This club is bigger than Ashley and always will be so my focus is on the team and to be fair they have responded really well in pre-season and they look like they have a new lease life under Bruce.

    Sea horse
In heraldry, the sea-horse is an emblem of safe travel, particularly by sea.

The heraldic sea-horse, however, does not resemble the natural seahorse at all. It is an imaginary creature with the head, chest and forelegs of a horse, webbed feet like a frog in place of its hooves and a scaled body that flows into the large powerful tail of a fish, which if properly drawn, circles around itself in a coil.

The mane may not be scalloped. It is a popular symbol found quite regularly in heraldry.

Tsunki: I don’t think anybody on here is in favour of Ashley. He is probably the most confusing person in the world, both in business and at NUFC. I am not an Ashley shill though, and resent being called one by Toon22. I also resent that the Confederacy of Dunces on here think they can turn around anything anybody says to them and use it as a sledgehammer because they have a gang. To gang up on others.

Tsunki – ganging up on posters who are disturbed about the on going mess at this club.

    The ongoing mess?

Would that be the mess that knocked back a £25M bid for Longstaff?

The mess that Schar and Dubravka arent’ being sold?

    The mess that signed Almiron?

    The mess that signed Joelinton?

    The mess that signed ASM?

The mess of players publicly saying they are enjoying training and playing for Bruce?

The mess of 3 wins out of 4 under Bruce in preseason?

    Or…

Are you referring to the damp squib mess of the Boycott Arsenal campaign?

Some of the blog loudmouths think we have really poor recall. As if we forgot that the same characters were shouting down the sceptics over the imminent “sale” and how we would have to come crawling back to the blog begging forgiveness for our “abuse” of the ITK’s. At times they were extremely vocal about how wrong we were and we would be shamed into leaving the blog forever.

Now we look back and see the fake sale as no more than a distraction, as Benitez was sidelined because he wouldn’t bend to a long contract under Ashleys business model and he would be replaced by a decidedly second rate stooge desperate to return to the big time, the same loudmouths are back large as life bullying bloggers once again for seeing that?

Shame? They don’t know what it means.

What if god forbid we finish 9th one place better than what Rafa achieved surely nobody can say owt then

The only stickler in this team and this season is Steve Bruce. Can he get the best out of a young and exciting team? It’s anybody’s guess and if anything he will at least steer us from relegation I have enough confidence in the team to do that at least. But I do think a lot will be surprised this year.
