Best Summer Spending For Four Years – But Tough Part Starts Now For Steve Bruce

This is turning out to be one of the best summer transfer windows under owner Mike Ashley since we spent over £50M net, back in 2015.

We had only just avoided relegation then under caretaker manager John Carver, after Alan Pardew had had enough, and left the club to join Crystal Palace in late 2014.

And Ashley seemed willing to put decent money out that summer for the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba, Florian Thauvin, and Ivan Toney – and all five players have since left the club.

Steve Bruce with Fabian Schar and Jack Colback

As a reminder here’s what we did in the summer transfer window four years ago – the summer before we were relegated again under Steve McClaren.

Newcastle have spent a net of £20M so far this summer and could end up actually spending money this summer as we did four years ago.

In the last three summers when Newcastle had world-class manager Rafa Benitez at the club – we made a profit of £31M in 2016, spent £12M net in 2017 and made a profit of £20M net last summer.

So at least for the three summer windows under Rafa, we made a profit of £39M.

You would have thought the time to spend money was when you have a world-class manager in place – who knows what he’s doing.

But it seemed like owner Mike Ashley wanted to retain control of the club and do it his way, as we found out six weeks ago when Rafa left.

So the club have reverted back to paying out the full fees for players and signing young players on long contracts.

We’ll just have to wait and see what happens, but that’s sound financial management.

The hard part starts now for Steve Bruce, but he’s done very well so far – given the toxic state of the club.

We hope Steve’s successful at Newcastle, but the main thing is for us to remain in the Premier League this season.

If Rafa had stayed, we had hoped to be looking higher than that – perhaps for a top-eight position.

We’ve had a top-eight position only once under Ashley when we somehow finished 5th back in 2012.

But maybe Steve Bruce and the lads can do that (top eight) this season – we certainly have the best squad we have had for several years.

So we have some hope for this season, and we’ll support Steve Bruce and the players as much as we can.

We also somehow have to force Mike Ashley to sell the club – hopefully before the end of the year.

Comments welcome.

I’m hoping that under Bruce we develop our own effective attacking style of play. I loved Rafa’s tenure but one of the niggles I had about his management style was, every game felt like a game of manager chess. where we were always setup to prevent the opposition from playing to their strengths. As a result of this constant weekly change I felt we failed to develop our own attacking style and understanding between players. This meant yes we got more than our fair share of points against the big boys but also that we failed to impose ourselves on games where on paper we should have cruised to victory.

Spot on, his way worked sometimes, but other times it was rank, but the Rffa Taliban couldnt discuss it . We’d play Cardiff, play awful, and nobody ( except me and a few others) asked why the hell rafa was paying so much respect to them. Same with plenty of teams in the championship. When we played Gayle and Mitro we were deadly, but the two up front idea would then be put to be immediately. This is the kind of criticism I had of Rafa

Going back to Tony and Billsons comments, yes there hasnt been an implosion. We havent sold any of the family silver, and whilst it could happen , I’ll bet Ashley will get decent bucks for them as he is a hard nosed bastard. We’ve added players, and before which there were guys screaming that Charnley couldnt complete a purchase and that Ashley wouldnt spend a bean. And by screaming, i mean screaming. So thats all been proved to be codswallop . I wanted Charnley to look abroad and try to find an up and coming coach but we have Bruce now. The players seem happy. And if rafa had them doing runs that apparently have been making guys nearly vomit, some guys here be calling him a genius . Im a bit worried about the new season , but excited too. But either way, the past 3 weeks have not been the disaster or implosion that Tarquin and the boys predicted.

22, did you watch the norwich recovery. WBA ? Oh, silly question, you dont watch games. I think two up front against the Burtons and Barnsleys of this worls was worth a look. If guys dont agree, fine, but at least there is logic in what I say. You need to get over Rafa , frog 22. Football doesn’t begin and end with Rafa, and neither does Newcastle United.

Maybe I will go out and get my car and run the green fcker over. If he is in the Dinnington area of course?!

To be honest I don’t think we’re in any different mess than at anytime under Ashley’s reign – Pards probably had the best squad at anytime in Ashley’s reign , Rafa probably got the most out of the squad we had – McClaren the worst – I’m discounting carver / kinnear as jokers.
We’ll see how Bruce gets on and he’ll get a few games to prove himself – I think Arsenal will show how the season will pan out ( at least until Jan ).
We have received no bids for any player including longstaff – rumours of a man u bid but nothing more than paper talk … Prob shows what the rest of the PREM think about our players just being bang average .. 4 days left of transfer window although I think our buying is done – pity we can’t sell Murphy / Colback / Lazaar etc but loans the best we can hope for with that bunch
