Get French Football News is reporting that there have been discussions of Newcastle buying Lille midfielder Thiago Maia. Newcastle have had an interest in the Brazilian since last summer when they tried but failed to secure a loan deal.
As indicated by L’Équipe, discussions around the possibility of Newcastle United buying Lille midfielder Thiago Maia have occurred in recent days, but nothing concrete yet.
— Get French Football News (@GFFN) August 4, 2019
Last summer Maia’s transfer fee was in the €20-30m, however after a poor year in France for Lille, the French club’s asking price for the 23-year-old has plummeted.
However, there is a strange report in Le 10 Sport that Genoa have bid €7m to purchase 50% of the player. This is an unusual deal which we are not sure that the outlet is getting right. However, the Italian club does appear to be very interested in Maia.
In June, there was speculation that Brazilian club Flamengo were close to sealing a shock €8.5m deal for Maia but nothing has resulted from those reports.
With Newcastle still uncertain of the future of Isaac Hayden and having lost Mohamed Diame this summer, they may be maintaining an interest in Maia as a precaution for a Hayden move. We could use another central midfielder, though, as the team appears to be playing with three in the middle going forward.

Comment #1Are you taking the proverbial Neil. Why so many buses at this time of night?
Another repost.

I reckon the big surprise this season for us could be Muto, he looked very sharp on Saturday and was unlucky not to score, I’d be tempted to have him down as TS in the Martoon predictions.
Shelvey is another I expect to see more goals from he has a wicked shot on him and that free kick Saturday would have had the commentators having orgasms had it gone in.

Comment #4Yeah, I agree Bill, Muto has good movement and technical ability, and can finish. He needs that bit of confidence that more time on the pitch and the trust of the manager would give.
I think a well run Newcastle would typically have a group of forwards like Rondon, Joelinton, Perez, Almirón, St Max, Muto and a Murphy or an Aarons.

Comment #7has there ever been a pay-to-play contract? I have seen plenty with incentives but never a pure – you play and get paid, you don’t and you get nowt.
Andy Carroll is a sicknote. There are certain players like him and Wilshere who are just not worth the risk. Marceleno? Darren Anderton.
Some of them just get injured and are made of glass.

Comment #8I wouldn’t have Carroll back now. It looks like we’ve already got one crock on our hands in Gayle, we don’t need another. Andy is a nice enough lad (or he was) and I love seeing Geordies in the team obviously, but I can’t see him making enough of an impact with his injury record. I’d rather see the money we’d spend on his agent and wages spent elsewhere.

Comment #9I see Saido Berahino is struggling to get a game in France now. Seems his career has dropped right off. I seem to recall a good few on here bemoaning the fact that we wouldn’t fork out £20m to secure his services. Bullet well and truly dodged by the looks of it.

Comment #10Aye Neil made a good point re. AC, that he’d be taking up a squad spot, a pity but it would be a gamble with his fitness.

Comment #11Gayle has some problems but I think he had like 23 goals and 9 assists for West Brom last year.
He is not a Wilshere/Carroll type sicknote.

Comment #12If I had to choose between Gayle and Carroll, I’d keep Gayle. Not a player I’d start with in the league, but he’s handy to have on the bench, or starting cup games.

Comment #13It’s a more than fair point to say sick note, no thanks. But Carroll is the best attacking header of a football I’ve seen in my entire life. Better than Wor Al, better than Sir Les, even better than Big Dunc. There’s really nothing like seeing the ball swung in from the touchline and a big centre forward rising imperiously above the pack, to power home a header, and the crowd losing its mind. Nothing. And no one does it better. I really want us to sign him, IF he can prove his fitness and IF we can agree reasonable terms. He would only be required to be one of 7 options in attack. If you can look after him, only deploy him essentially in the last twenty of games, he must be worth considering. He’s a special footballer, a one off and a Geordie number 9.

Comment #14I would have Andy Carroll back if he would actually play. But that’s not going to happen. He will be injured or be on the bench recovering from injury and have a few “cameos” and trying to get fit before his next injury. He is made of glass.

Comment #15Berahino is one of those frustrating players where he could have been a decent Premier League striker if he’d just focused on his game and applied himself. I think he had outside influences turning his head and distracting him. He seemed to have the ability, but just not the right attitude.
A bit like Ben Arfa, who had that unbelievable skill and just a crappy work ethic. Such a waste for us he was. On his day he was one of the best players we’ve ever had, yet we hardly got to see what he was capable of due to laziness. It’s no coincidence that trouble has followed him throughout his career. He can blame the managers or whatever, but he’s the only constant. Such a shame.

Comment #16Off on hols for a week later today, so there will not be many posts from me during that time, who said hooray?
Hoping I can catch the game somewhere although the missus and granddaughter are hell bent on shopping so might have try some cunning plans.
I should be able to read the blog and keep up with the soap opera that is Neil and Eds blog and hopefully shouldn’t miss many tense and griping (sic) instalments.
Bye Bye for now!

Comment #17Nicky: Carroll keeps getting different injuries. He is a sicknote. I wish he wasn’t and would sign him in a heartbeat. But he is. It is totally pointless to have him sitting in the physio’s room.
And his Agent will not let him sign a pay-when-you play contract. Whatever the romance of coming home to Newcastle. The – I’d walk the streets aal day aal neet stuff.

Comment #18Nicky, in terms of Carroll’s ability on the pitch, I think he’s great. I think his footwork is better than people give him credit for, and of course he’s a beast in the air. I’d love to see Almiron supplying balls for him to put in the back of the net, but I think he’s finished in terms of his fitness. If we could have a guaranteed twenty games a season from him, then I’d take a punt, but I doubt he’d get anywhere near that many games.

Comment #23I think we are done with transfers unless Fatty does something stupid. Maybe a loan?
Keeping the money in the bank in case we are relegated.
He will not sack Bruce even if we are relegated.
I see people on here saying we are 5th with the bookies to be relegated. That’s 15th and we were 13th last year with the great and wonderful – can do no wrong – but got us off to the worst start since the 19th Century – RAFA.

Comment #24Rafa was a great manager elsewhere. Especially for Valencia and Liverpool. But seriously. He wasn’t that great for us. Relegated, when he had 10 games to turn it around. 44 and 45 points in the Premier League. Of course, Fat Mike has to take a lot of the blame but sanctifying Rafa?

Yeah, that of course is possible.given that the club has previous for that sort of thing.

I was convinced he was leaving, and for a very noble cause. He’d even indicated in interviews that he had an agreement to leave – I wonder what has changed?
